Job description

We are looking for a maternity cover for a fixed term contract of 12 months starting in November 2025 to join our gastroenterology Dietetic team as a band 6 Gastroenterology specialist Dietitian.

With this post being a maternity leave cover ideally we are looking for a Dietitian with Gastroenterology skills but we will consider those with suitable transferable skills such as parental nutrition management.

Main duties of the job

The post holder would be expected to managing a caseload of adult Gastroenterology patients with complex needs using evidence based/client centred principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions.

The caseload is both inpatient wards and outpatient clinics.

The Dietitians work closely with the gastroenterology MDT and are respected as key members of the team.

We already have a well-established dietetic led adult Coeliac clinic with weekly consultant MDT's.

We attend IBD MDT's and have a large number of patients on polymeric diets. Our IBS service uses a mixture of online resources, group sessions and one to one clinics to deliver first and second line dietary advice.

About us

You would be joining a team of 4 Gastroenterology Specialist Dietitians.

This post is based at our Royal Blackburn Hospital site. Clinical support and supervision will be available from the band 7 Specialist Dietitian as well as band 6 Specialist Dietitian peers in the team.

The Gastroenterology Dietetic team is part of the wider Acute Adult team. East Lancashire Hospitals Dietetic Department has a number of clinical teams that cover the hospitals and communities of East Lancashire. We are a department that covers inpatients and the community from cradle to grave. The department has nearly 90 staff and covers many specialties and is known for its innovation, development and training

East Lancashire Teaching Hospitals has a large Digestive Diseases unit with 10 Gastroenterologists, 3 IBD nurses, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Liver nurses, Endoscopists' that use state of the art technology.

East Lancashire Hospitals Trust is a teaching hospital. The Dietetic department is an experienced trainer for Dietetic students and provides placements for all the different levels of student placements from Chester University, Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Central Lancashire.

Electronic patient record systems are in place. Cerner is used in an inpatient setting and EMIS is a community setting.

Job responsibilities

The post holder would be expected to:

Assess, implement and monitor complex nutrition regimes including enteral nutrition and parenteral nutrition

To attend Consultant ward rounds and MDT meetings

Working closely with the Trust's Nutrition Team .

Triage and manage an outpatient caseload with support from a booking team and clinical support workers.

Take part in clinical student training for Dietitians, Medical Students and other Health Care Professionals.

  • Demonstrable evidence of ongoing CPD

  • Worked in the NHS as a Dietitian

  • Experience of managing complex enteral feeding regimens
  • Experience working as part of a MDT Nutritional Support team
  • Organisational and time management skills
  • IT skills (competent in the use of Microsoft office applications)
  • Ability to interpret complex clinical conditions including biochemistry
  • Competence in calculating nutritional requirements and developing nutrition care plans

  • Clinically competent to give specialist nutritional support advice to patients and their support network
  • Clinically competent to initiate and monitor complex enteral feed regimes.
