Financial Controller (Permanent Position - Coleman James Ltd acting as an Employment Agency)

Our client within the Construction industry is seeking an experienced Financial Controller to lead and develop their finance function. This is a hands on strategic leadership role with a clear progression pathway to Finance Director.

As the business continues to expand its project pipeline and invest in people and systems, this position offers the autonomy, influence, and support to make a genuine impact.

Key Duties & Responsibilities
Leadership & Strategy
  • Drive continuous improvement across finance processes and procedures.
  • Provide strong leadership, ensuring high levels of motivation, teamwork and communication across the team.
  • Represent the business professionally, consistently demonstrating company values and ethos.

Finance Operations
  • Oversee day to day financial operations including payroll, expenses, VAT returns, and ledger management, providing hands‑on support during staff absence.
  • Produce timely and accurate management information to support directors and operational decision‑making.
  • Ensure accurate and compliant weekly and monthly payroll processing, maintaining data integrity.
  • Manage third party payments including Pension, VAT, and PAYE.
  • Reconcile payroll and ensure all associated reporting is completed accurately.
  • Manage accounts receivable and accounts payable processes in line with company policies and targets.
Financial Control & Reporting
  • Prepare accurate financial results and analysis on a monthly/quarterly basis.
  • Maintain and review internal controls across key business areas and processes.
  • Provide financial insight to explain performance, variances, and working capital movements to support robust commercial decision making.
  • Lead the preparation of annual statutory financial statements and tax returns, working directly with local advisors and acting as main contact for site audits.
Team Management & Collaboration
  • Work closely with a small existing finance team, guiding their work, training, and development.
  • Collaborate with operational managers and partners throughout the year to ensure budgets are understood, implemented, and achieved.
  • Deputise for the Finance Director when required, including attending meetings and undertaking additional duties to meet business needs.
