Job description
Overview

Are you interested in a role with flexible working hours, the chance to meet people from diverse communities, and a positive impact on your local community? The Office for National Statistics (ONS) is the UK’s largest producer of official statistics, covering key economic, social and demographic topics.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a modern, innovative and inclusive team that sits at the heart of public service delivery.

Role

This is a great opportunity to join our team as a Field Interviewer (via AMS). As a Field Interviewer carrying out official surveys you will help inform Government about the state of the nation. The role starts with 5 weeks of comprehensive training to ensure your success.

The Field Interviewer will be a mix of visiting sampled addresses to encourage survey completion and interviewing respondents in their homes. This role is not office based. You will work within a roughly 40-mile radius of an allocated location. Work will be allocated to fit your contracted hours in the area, so you should consider how your home location relates to your chosen location preference.

The role offers flexible hours, broadly equivalent to 22 hours per week. Interviews will need to be conducted between 09:00 and 20:00, with potential for admin and travel time outside these hours. Interviewers will work across mornings, afternoons and evenings and are contracted to work Monday to Saturday.

Responsibilities
  • Visit sampled addresses and encourage participation in surveys; interview respondents in their homes where required.
  • Plan, organise and manage own workloads with full training and ongoing support.
  • Transport and carry equipment (e.g., laptop and survey materials), including walking between addresses and navigating stairs when in the field.
Requirements
  • Live within a 10-mile radius of the location and be able to travel to addresses within a 40-mile radius from the advertised location.
  • Interviews conducted between 09:00–20:00 with hours split across mornings, afternoons, and evenings; some Saturdays may be required.
  • Experience of using a laptop and a smartphone.
  • Self-disciplined, self-motivated, and able to work without supervision.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills and enjoy meeting people.
  • Be able to transport and carry equipment; occasionally walk between addresses and navigate stairs.
  • Full valid UK Driving License (including rights of EU Nationals) and full use of a car for work purposes.
  • Proof of Identity and a broadband internet connection at home prior to taking up employment.
