Job description
Fetal Monitoring Midwife

The closing date is 11 December 2025

An opportunity has arisen for a fetal monitoring midwife in a permanent position. The role will be to:

  • Support staff in providing a safe, robust and consistent approach to antenatal and intrapartum fetal monitoring, including both continuous and intermittent fetal monitoring.
  • Develop staff’s awareness in recognising factors that could contribute to misinterpretation of cardiotocography (CTGs) and impaired clinical decision making.
  • Ensure staff are assessing fetal well‑being in the context of the woman’s health, pregnancy, gestational age, stage of labour, intrapartum risk factor.
  • Participate in teaching on multi‑disciplinary training days and facilitate learning opportunities following interesting case reviews.
  • Undertake audits to ensure compliance with fetal monitoring guidelines and national requirements relating to fetal monitoring.

  • The post holder will be involved in continuing to embed the principles of physiological CTG interpretation for intrapartum CTGs as the Trust has recently transitioned from a NICE based approach.
  • To use every opportunity to enhance teaching, learning, and reflection within clinical settings that involve intrapartum or antenatal fetal monitoring.
  • To work daily alongside clinical staff, educating and supporting with all elements of antenatal and intrapartum fetal monitoring, including physiological CTG interpretation, antenatal CTG/cCTG interpretation, and promoting safe intermittent auscultation practice.

Job responsibilities

To work collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team to ensure that appropriate intrapartum and antenatal fetal monitoring care plans are made. Maintaining a focus on individualised care and considering the whole clinical picture at all times.

To support midwives and obstetricians to ensure effective implementation of the intrapartum and antenatal fetal monitoring guidelines.

To work flexibly to support best fetal monitoring practice in both antenatal and intrapartum areas including maternity triage, day assessment unit, antenatal ward, labour ward and low risk birth settings.

Using specialist expert knowledge, experience and practice, continually update and develop fetal monitoring within the Trust, embedding the latest evidence‑based practice, in line with national requirements.

Education and qualifications
  • Registered Midwife
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Degree level or equivalent experience

  • NLS
  • Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics Qualification.

  • Communicating effectively with women, staff and other agencies
  • Experience in all areas of midwifery with emphasis on recent intrapartum work

  • Evidence of knowledge of recent midwifery research and clinical audit
  • Ability to practice within the scope of the NMC Code of Professional Conduct
  • Demonstrate an ability to apply research to practice and to support changes in practice as a result of clinical audit
