Family Support Worker

Salary: £28,000

Location: Birmingham (Residential Family Assessment Setting)

Shifts: 13 shifts over 4 weeks (6 nights / 7 days), incl. alternate weekends

About the Home Setting

This role is based in a beautiful 8‑apartment residential family assessment service. Each family lives in their own fully self‑contained apartment, creating a safe, homely and dignified environment. The service supports families referred by local authorities across Birmingham, Worcester, Hereford and Somerset.

Who You'll Be Supporting (Clients)

You will work directly with:

  • New parents needing guidance and support
  • Families with older children where additional parenting capacity support is required
  • Families experiencing challenges such as:
  • Substance misuse
  • Mental health difficulties
  • Domestic abuse
  • Low parenting confidence / first‑time parenting support

Families stay for 16‑week placements, during which you help them develop routines, confidence and long‑term independence.

Role Overview

As a Family Support Worker, you will work within the residential home to:

  • Support parents with daily routines, feeding, hygiene, safety and bonding
  • Observe parenting practices and provide strengths‑based guidance
  • Help families adjust, settle and feel safe in the home environment
  • Maintain safeguarding standards and elevate concerns appropriately
  • Build positive relationships while maintaining professional boundaries
  • Work collaboratively with social workers and multi‑agency partners
  • Promote independence to prepare families to transition back into the community
Requirements
  • NVQ Level 3 (or willingness to complete it)
  • Strong transferable skills from care, education, housing, early years, community or support backgrounds
  • Empathy, resilience, calm approach and excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work long day shifts (8am‑8:30pm) and waking nights (8pm‑8:30am)
  • Availability for every other weekend
