Job description
Role Overview

We have partnered with a leading global bank looking to hire a European Power Trader to join their London-based trading team. This is an expansionary hire aimed at strengthening the firm’s existing power trading platform and broadening coverage across continental European and UK power markets. The desk operates a flat, collaborative structure with an expectation that team members contribute across a wide range of products, including power, emissions, gas, and sparks/darks.

The ideal candidate will bring 5-12+ years of relevant trading experience, preferably within flows or derivatives-focused environments, and possess strong knowledge of physical power markets. Additionally, familiarity with swaps/futures and linear power instruments is required, with any options experience being an additional plus (but not required).

This opportunity sits within a well-established, institutional energy-focused trading desk, and represents a strategic growth hire focused on expanding capabilities and deepening market presence across European power markets.

Key Responsibilities
  • Trade power products across continental Europe (primary focus) and UK hubs, focusing on both financial and physical power markets
  • Price and manage flat price risk within the power book across core Continental European power hubs, including Germany, France, the Netherlands, Italy, and Spain etc
  • Hedge and manage client flow efficiently, maintaining liquidity and competitiveness in core markets
  • Monitor and trade across related products, including emissions, gas, and sparks/darks, leveraging cross-market insights
  • Support UK Power trading activity and contribute to trading across interrelated markets such as gas and emissions
  • Operate within a flat team structure, contributing collaboratively and flexibly across multiple product areas
  • Maintain disciplined trading within defined risk parameters and the bank’s risk management framework
  • Provide market insight and contribute to the growth of the power trading platform, identifying new opportunities and enhancing desk capabilities
Requirements & Qualifications
  • 4–12 years of trading experience in power markets (experience working on a flows-style desk would be a plus)
  • Strong familiarity with physical power markets, swaps/futures, and linear power instruments (any options experience is a plus but not required).
  • Previous experience at a bank, a utility, or commodity trading house, with exposure to physical power
  • Demonstrated ability to manage flat price risk and hedge client flow across major Continental European hubs (Germany, France, Netherlands, Italy, Spain)
  • Familiarity with European power markets and an understanding of emissions and gas trading dynamics
  • Commercially minded with a collaborative approach and the ability to cover a broad product set
  • Not suitable for pure proprietary traders; the desk focuses on a mix of client flows and market-making/risk-taking
  • Targeting candidates at VP level, with flexibility to consider strong Director-level profiles
