Job description

We're seeking a detail-driven Estimator to take ownership of the pre-construction pricing process and support the growth of our projects division. This role is ideal for someone with strong cost planning and pricing experience who thrives at the front-end of the project lifecycle.

Unlike a delivery-focused Quantity Surveyor, this position centres on tender pricing, supplier engagement and preparing submission-ready proposals, ensuring competitiveness and commercial accuracy before projects are handed over to the QS team for delivery control.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead tender pricing and cost preparation from initial enquiry to submission
  • Analyse drawings, specifications, and site information to produce accurate cost estimates
  • Liaise with subcontractors and suppliers to obtain and compare quotations
  • Build and maintain pricing schedules / BoQs with clear allowances and risk provisions
  • Assess potential preliminary costs, resource requirements, and programme considerations
  • Attend pre-tender meetings and provide commercial input at bid stage
  • Work with project and commercial teams to hand over successfully priced jobs
  • Evaluate risk elements early (ground conditions, planning, surveys, access etc.)
  • Identify value engineering opportunities to support tender competitiveness
  • Maintain relationships with supply chain to drive efficiency and cost advantage
  • Support the development of bid strategies and post-tender clarifications
Skills & Experience
  • Proven experience as an Estimator (or QS with strong estimating background) especially in construction, civils, housing or related sectors
  • Strong background in tendering, cost build-up, and price negotiation
  • Comfortable evaluating scope and project risks before delivery stage
  • Able to work from technical drawings and site data confidently
  • Commercially aware with understanding of margins, prelims and bid strategy
  • Proficient in constructing BOQs and using estimating tools / Excel
  • Understanding of NEC or JCT contracts beneficial (but not the core of this role)
  • Attention to detail, numerically precise and deadline-focused
  • Strong communicator, capable of engaging effectively with suppliers and internal teams
