Job summary

A specialist subcontractor in Glasgow is looking for an experienced Estimator to join their pre-construction/commercial team. The role involves preparing detailed cost estimates and tender submissions to support project acquisition. Ideal candidates will have a BSc in Quantity Surveying or Construction Management and proven experience in the field. Strong analytical and communication skills are essential for success in this role.

Overview

First Task are delighted to be working with an established, specialist sub-contractor who work with some of the UK's largest contractors, delivering packages up to the value of £8m. The business has already secured approx. 75% of next year's turnover and are actively recruiting an Estimator to join their pre-construction/commercial team.

The Estimator will play a key role in producing accurate and competitive tenders, providing detailed cost plans, and supporting the business in securing projects by delivering clear and well-prepared commercial proposals.

Responsibilities
  • Preparation of detailed cost estimates and tender submissions for projects up to £5m-£8m in value.
  • Analyse drawings, specifications, and other documentation to prepare accurate quantities and costs.
  • Liaise with clients, main contractors, and supply chain partners to obtain competitive quotations.
  • Support in the development of bid strategies and value engineering opportunities to maximise project success.
  • Ensure all tender documentation is compliant and submitted within deadlines.
  • Maintain and develop strong supplier and subcontractor relationships to ensure accurate pricing.
  • Provide cost advice and budgets during the pre-construction phase.
  • Attend pre- and post-tender meetings, providing cost breakdowns and clarifications as required.
  • Assist the Commercial and Contracts Managers with handover of secured projects to ensure accurate financial information is transferred.
Experience / Qualifications
  • BSc in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or relevant equivalent.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Proven experience preparing estimates/tenders, ideally for a specialist subcontractor or main contractor.
  • Good knowledge of construction processes and supply chains.
  • Excellent numerical and analytical skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Full UK driver's license (occasional site visits or client meetings may be required).
