Job description
Overview

The Adult Education Service is part of Coventry City Council. We provide a wide range of courses for Coventry residents aged 19+ and target provision at people with the highest levels of need. We offer long courses in English, maths, ESOL, ICT/Digital and vocational subjects such as Early Years, along with provision for adults with learning disabilities. We also offer a wide range of short community courses in arts, crafts, music, dance, exercise, fitness and family learning. In addition, we run a supportive study programme for young people. Our work-based learning offers Apprenticeships in Nursery Workers, Teaching Assistants, Leadership/Management, and Customer Care. We also provide courses for adults seeking work via the Council’s Job Shop. Our main base is Southfields Old School, CV1 5EJ, with provision at around 25 other sites within Coventry, mostly in areas of highest need.

Role and Contract

What is the job role? 12 months fixed-term contract. This post is a part-time temporary 0.45 FTE post of 16.65 working hours/week, of which 10 hours/week consist of teaching ESOL. This is an opportunity for an appropriately qualified candidate to join the ESOL team within Coventry Adult Education Service. We deliver high-quality English Language Acquisition programmes to men and women from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds in Coventry. The role involves teaching ESOL in community venues around Coventry. The postholder will create an engaging and supportive learning environment, tailor lessons to meet diverse learner needs, foster confidence and support learners\' development towards integration and employment.

All candidates must have the Right to Work in the UK. We are not offering sponsorship for this role. This post is exempted under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and appointment will be conditional upon a satisfactory DBS check.

Requirements and Qualities
  • Experienced ESOL tutor with skills to design, plan, deliver and report on ESOL programmes from pre-Entry to Level 1.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of curriculum practice and ESOL teaching experience in a community-based adult education context.
  • Ability to deliver an inclusive, culturally competent curriculum to raise aspirations for residents from diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience setting individual targets and evaluating learner progress and achievements.
  • Good understanding of equity, diversity and inclusion, safeguarding and Prevent; proactive in safeguarding young people and vulnerable adults.
  • Effective verbal and written communication with a range of audiences; ability to promote Adult Education provision using various methods, including social media.
  • English and Maths qualifications at Level 2; a teaching qualification and an ESOL subject specialist qualification at Level 4 or above.
  • Willingness to teach in a range of venues across the city and throughout the year; experience with mixed level ESOL groups is desirable.
  • Awareness of KCSIE recommendations for an additional pre-employment check; online candidate checks may form part of recruitment.
