Job Description

What if you could do the kind of work the world needs?

At WSP, you can access our global scale, contribute to landmark projects and connect with the brightest minds in your field to do the best work of your life. You can embrace your curiosity in a culture that celebrates new ideas and diverse perspectives. You can experience a world of opportunity and the chance to shape a career as unique as you.

We are seeking a number of Project Managers to join our Environmental Project Management Team. Reporting to a Senior Environmental Project Manager, you will play a key role where you will be responsible for supporting the delivery of a diverse and exciting range of environmentally led projects across the UK in both the public and private sectors.

The types of projects that we deliver are highly varied and include some of the UK's most exciting and nationally important large‑scale infrastructure schemes (for example National Grid's Great Grid Upgrade, Heathrow Expansion, East-West Rail and Sizewell C), as well as associated developments and programmes for the built environment. Our clients are public and private entities, and key sectors we operate in include highways, rail, aviation, defence, nuclear, residential and property, energy generation and renewables, and transmission and distribution. We have a broad coverage across the project cycle, from supporting business cases, and securing consents and permits (DCO), to design and construction.

You will have the opportunity to manage smaller scale projects whilst assisting Senior Project Managers on larger projects to aid your development. There is also opportunity to line‑manage and mentor junior members of the team and input into the Environmental Project Management Team strategy.

Your responsibilities
  • Support the development of project proposals including determining project requirements, scope, resources, programme, and cost estimates (budgets) for project delivery.
  • Develop and maintain project management documentation including project management plans, cost estimates and forecasts, risk registers, project schedules, stakeholder registers, project organisation charts etc. to successfully deliver project objectives on smaller scale projects and assisting a Senior Project Manager on larger projects.
  • Monitor and control the project schedule, staff hours, budgets, forecasts, and expenditure as well as project progress.
  • Ensure that health and safety information for site visits, including securing internal approvals, are in place.
  • Undertake contract management and contract administration.
  • Actively manage project change and risks, ensuring that project governance is adhered to and projects are delivered compliant and optimised. Work with technical teams and other specialists to adhere to contractual and scope agreements.
  • Work with, lead, mentor and develop multi-disciplinary environmental project teams, consisting of technical/professional staff and suppliers.
  • Promote and hold the project team accountable for delivery of environmental betterment, and future‑ready and net‑zero strategies.
  • Present as the face of Environment and Consents when interfacing with other WSP teams and presenting as the face of WSP when interfacing with clients and stakeholders. Foster and grow excellent relationships.
Your team

We are a strong, dedicated and successful environmentally focused Project Management team looking to grow further to support WSP's robust pipeline of secured projects. We are proud of our friendly, supportive and collaborative culture, which allows our team members to develop their skills and grow.

We are a centre of excellence and an integral part of our Environment & Consents discipline, where we provide leadership and tailored support on our projects. This encompasses PMO, Project Controls, and Project Manager and Project Director roles; we work across all stages of the project delivery cycle.

Our achievements mean we are seeking experienced Project Managers and PMO Specialists with a strong understanding and awareness of environmental consultancy, a passion for optimising project delivery, and an inclusive and supportive approach to team development.

What we will be looking for you to demonstrate
  • An interest or experience in the environment and/or land‑based sustainable development, a can‑do attitude and a hunger to develop your career.
  • Evidence of being a confident communicator, both written and verbal, with the ability to convey key points and keep project teams and stakeholders informed.
  • Experience of holding the role of Assistant Project Manager or Project Manager within a project or PMO environment, with a preference for a background in environment or sustainability sectors.
  • Working knowledge of programme management, including work breakdown structure, dependencies and critical path, and ability to assess MS Project / Primavera P6 or similar outputs.
  • Evidence of commercial and contractual awareness, ability to demonstrate financial acumen and analytical skills with a proven track record of delivering projects within budget and managing change control. Experience with Professional Services Contracts, including NEC3/4 would be beneficial.
  • Membership of an appropriate professional institution (e.g. PMI, APM, MIEnvSc, MIEMA, MRICS) and either chartered or working towards chartership / other accreditations.

Don't quite meet all the criteria? Apply, and we can see how your experience aligns to this role and other opportunities within the team.
