Job description
Job Summary

The Environmental Health and Safety Manager as a staff specialist in safety and environmental health. This role involves developing and implementing procedures to address potential safety and environmental health hazards, conducting safety training, and ensuring completion of all required safety and environmental reports.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Oversee the creation, implementation, and maintenance of corporate safety and environmental policies and procedures, ensuring PRIDE provides a safe and environmentally responsible workplace in compliance with OSHA Industrial Safety Standards.
  2. Establish a strong working relationship with Florida Department of Corrections safety inspectors and staff to maintain consistent and effective safety and environmental compliance.
  3. Audit all PRIDE industries annually for potential safety or environmental hazards, implement corrective action plans for identified deficiencies, and perform follow-up reviews to ensure compliance.
  4. Train, counsel, and advise staff on safety and environmental matters to promote a proactive approach to workplace safety for all PRIDE employees and inmate workers.
  5. Stay informed on current safety and environmental literature by attending seminars and meetings and monitoring relevant federal and state laws impacting the company.
  6. Set target areas and long-term goals for accident prevention and cost control.
  7. Audit work practices to verify adherence to safety and environmental policies and procedures, enforce corrective actions when necessary, and ensure continuing compliance.
  8. Represent the corporation in interactions with OSHA, EPA, DOC, FDEP, State Fire Marshal, and other external inspectors as needed.
  9. Maintain required emission permits from federal, state, or local authorities using personal expertise rather than consulting firms.
  10. Develop and implement methods for collecting and archiving data required for NPDES and other pollutant discharge permits for all relevant PRIDE operations.
  11. Act as company liaison with governing bodies, including State Fire Marshal, FDEP, FDOC, EPA, and OSHA, for safety and environmental issues.
  12. Serve as Project Manager for environmental cleanup projects when required.
  13. Conduct quarterly Safety Committee meetings with Corporate Safety Committee members.
  14. Perform internal safety and environmental audits at each PRIDE location at least once per year, with a minimum of three audits monthly, following a scheduled calendar developed annually. Each audit includes follow-up visits to confirm that deficiencies are corrected. Focus areas include conditions or activities that may pose safety or environmental risks, as well as work practice reviews. Drive individual location managers to resolve audit findings promptly, ensuring no deficiency remains uncorrected or without a correction plan within 30 days.
Requirements
  1. Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Safety Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or technical field. Eight years professional experience in safety and environmental health in the manufacturing industry.
  2. Skills: Strong grammar and spelling. Ability to read and interpret documents, such as policies and procedures, write reports and correspondence, and speak effectively before groups.
  3. Mathematical Skills: Ability to perform technical calculations.
  4. Reasoning Ability: Skill in addressing complex problems and interpreting instructions presented in various forms.
  5. Specialized Knowledge and/or Skill: Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH). Proficiency in relevant company information management systems required within 90 days of hire or promotion to this position.
  6. Other Skills and Abilities: Proficiency in Microsoft Office. Strong leadership and people skills, personal time management, honesty, dependability, adaptability, and effective interaction with employees and management at all levels.
