Join Our Environmental Health Team – 3 Permanent Roles Available

We’re looking for passionate professionals to join our busy but supportive Environmental Health Department, which is made up of five specialist teams:

  • Animal Health & Licensing
  • Food Safety
  • Health and Safety
  • Pest Control
  • Pollution & Noise Control

We have three exciting opportunities for either Environmental Health Officers (Grade 11) or Senior Technical Officers (Grade 9/10 depending on experience and qualifications):

  1. Air Quality Specialist – Pollution & Noise Control Team – Senior Technical Officer
  2. Contaminated Land Specialist – Pollution & Noise Control Team – Senior Technical Officer
  3. Food Safety Officer – Food Safety Team – Environmental Health Officer or Senior Technical Officer (depending on qualifications and experience)
About the Roles
Senior Technical Officers for Air Quality and Contaminated Land (1 of each)

Requirements for both roles:

Has specialised expertise in the functional area of responsibility, and necessary qualifications. These roles will require qualifications and experience in Contaminated Land or Air Quality to so that the postholder has adequate knowledge due to the technical nature of these job roles.

  • Has an in-depth understanding and experience of Air Quality or Contaminated land and ideally, good knowledge and understanding of enforcement and legal options which can be used in the functions of Environmental Health, more widely.
  • Excellent team and multi-disciplinary / agency working, demonstrating the ability to work with others to deliver common or shared outcomes.
  • Ability to use IT packages such as MS Word and Excel to maintain data and produce reports.
  • Ability to review highly technical reports and data related to the Contaminated Land and Air Quality in relation to the Council’s statutory responsibilities in relation to Air Quality and Contaminated Land.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills to be able to present evidence or technical information to a range of recipients for example; as a consultee to the planning department; attend court as a witness and to prepare prosecution files (as appropriate); prepare reports, as required, for presentation to councillors, internal and external stakeholders and in relation to the Council’s statutory reporting responsibilities in Air Quality or Contaminated Land.
Food Safety Officer (Environmental Health Officer or Senior Technical Officer)

Responsible for ensuring compliance with food safety legislation through:

  • Conducting food hygiene inspections in line with FSA requirements.
  • Investigating complaints about food premises and food-related issues.
  • Revisiting non-compliant premises and enforcing corrective actions.
  • Carrying out monitoring visits and food sampling under UKHSA programmes.
  • Preparing legal notices and documentation and attending court when required. This role offers exposure to a wide variety of food businesses, from small local outlets to large, approved premises and specialist operations like on-farm milk pasteurising.
All Roles

All roles involve preparing reports, presenting technical information, and occasionally attending court as a witness. You’ll work closely with colleagues, other departments, and external partners to achieve shared outcomes.

What We’re Looking For
  • Fully qualified Environmental Health Officers (EHORB registered or equivalent) for the Food Safety Role or suitably qualified Senior Technical Officers (STOs).
  • For STO roles, relevant technical qualifications and experience (e.g., Higher Certificate in Food Premises Inspection) are required.
  • Candidates completing an accredited Environmental Health degree (BSc/MSc) will be considered if they have enforcement or other experience in local government and relevant to the role.
  • Strong IT skills (MS Word, Excel), excellent communication, and the ability to interpret complex technical data.
  • A full, valid driving licence (pool cars available).
Development Opportunities

If you’re working towards becoming a Registered Environmental Health Practitioner (EHP), we’ll support you to complete your CIEH portfolio. Once registered, you’ll progress to the EHO role and pay grade.

Working Arrangements
  • Full-time (37 hours per week, Monday–Friday), with flexible working options available—please contact us to discuss.
  • Participation in the out-of-hours standby rota and occasional evening/weekend work is required.
  • Medical screening will be undertaken as appropriate.
