Overview

Environment & Sustainability Manager - Civil Works Alliance (Contract: Sizewell C). Location: Suffolk/Ipswich - Hybrid. The Civil Works Alliance (CWA) brings together Laing O'Rourke, Bouygues, and Balfour Beatty to deliver the civils scope for Sizewell C, including Enabling Earthworks, Main Civil Works, Marine and Tunnelling. You will provide leadership and direction across the Sizewell C project, ensuring contractual and regulatory requirements are met, guiding delivery teams, and driving continual improvement in environmental performance and sustainability.

Partnering with the Head of Environmental Management and Sustainability, you will oversee environmental risk management, compliance and audit programmes, and lead a team of Environmental & Sustainability Advisors. You will embed best practice, support innovation, and ensure Sizewell C delivers to the highest sustainability standards.

Role requires collaboration with clients, regulators, stakeholders and delivery teams to champion environmental and sustainability initiatives across the project.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead implementation of the Environmental and Sustainability strategy across the project
  • Provide professional advice and leadership to project teams, subcontractors and stakeholders
  • Manage sustainability and environmental risks, ensuring effective mitigation and regulatory/contractual compliance
  • Support, develop and coach a team of Environmental & Sustainability Advisors
  • Deliver and oversee local audit programmes, inspections, and joint site tours, ensuring continuous improvement
  • Use data, audits, and incident findings to inform sustainability action plans and key business decisions
  • Build strong relationships with clients, regulators, stakeholders and delivery teams
  • Champion environmental and sustainability initiatives, innovations and best practices across the project
  • Ensure lessons learned are captured and embedded across teams through communities of practice
  • Provide regular reporting to the Delivery Leadership Team on environmental and sustainability performance
What skills & experience we are looking for
Essential
  • Proven experience in environmental and/or sustainability roles within the infrastructure or construction industry
  • Strong leadership skills, with experience managing and developing teams
  • Degree in a relevant field (environmental science, sustainability, engineering, or similar)
  • Knowledge and experience implementing ISO 14001
  • Strong commercial awareness with cost estimation skills
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills, able to influence at all levels
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
Desirable
  • Chartered Environmental Professional (CEnv)
  • Internal environmental auditor qualification
  • Competent ecological surveyor for at least one protected species
  • Knowledge of Development Consent Orders (DCOs) and Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIPs)
