Overview
The C&W hospital has a strong Endoscopy service. The team is led by Endoscopy Lead Nurse and Consultant Clinical Lead who work alongside the clinical and management teams. Our Endoscopy is JAG accredited with up-to-date modern equipment and friendly staff. There is strong multi-disciplinary working and close links with other providers. We provide a range of gastrointestinal procedures in 4 well equipped endoscopy rooms. We run a 5 day service including out of hours support to the Gastroenterology team for gastrointestinal bleeds.

Role and responsibilities
- A HCA can undertake a range of roles within their overall job and their level of responsibility will be appropriate/ commensurate to the level of knowledge and skills they have acquired. Irrespective of the patient care pathway, the core competences at each level should be consistently applied.
- To participate, under the supervision of a Registered Nurse/Midwife, in the delivery of patient care to a defined client group, in accordance with the philosophy of care which enables clients to maintain their skills and maximize the potential to achieve independence.
- Work as part of an effective and caring team. The post holder works under the indirect supervision of the Registered Nurse/Midwife. They will work within the boundaries of their existing and developing skills at all times. The post holder is expected to maintain high standards of care, managing their time, tasks and resources effectively.
- The post holder will perform clinical and administrative duties as requested within competence and scope of the post.
- Clinical Support Role: Under direct supervision assists with the delivery of care as described by the Registered Nurse.
- Assist patients with general hygiene needs reporting any changes in patients’ condition.
- Assist the patient to dress appropriately and safeguard patients’ belongings and space.
- Under supervision take and record observations as required and inform the registered nurse of any changes in the patient’s condition.
- Support the Registered Nurse in meeting and recording patients’ elimination needs. Report changes and record as appropriate.
- Work with the Registered Nurse to gain knowledge of pressure area care, mobilisation aids, moving and handling, and their safe use.
- Assist in the moving, handling and positioning of patients and adhere to the Trust Moving and Handling policy.
- Report physical and psychological changes to the Registered Nurse and ensure pain and distress are acted on promptly.
- Be aware of patient dietary needs and adhere to protected mealtimes. Deliver meals and provide drinks where required and record intake.
- Report relevant information regarding patient care to the Registered Nurse. Contribute to care of dying and deceased patients and support relatives/friends as appropriate.
- Support health promotion/education, e.g. prevention of pressure ulcers and DVT.
- Participate in regular unit meetings and other meetings as requested. Undertake tasks and procedures within competency.
- Participate in research activities as required.
- Assist in maintenance of stock levels and general department logistics (e.g., stocking equipment, linen, deliveries).
- Ensure all patients have opportunities to meet dietary requirements and greet/assist visitors and patients in a welcoming manner.
- Escort stable patients to and from wards/departments when required.
- Prepare procedure rooms, assist with endoscopic procedures, collect specimens, reprocess endoscopy equipment, and perform daily department checks.
- Undergo cannulation training and be able to cannulate patients undergoing Endoscopic procedures under supervision.
- Ensure prep rooms and linen areas have appropriate supplies; manage discharge lounge refreshments as required.
- Communicate information about endoscopic procedures clearly and prepare the procedure room and patient for procedures.
- Assist colleagues during endoscopic procedures and support patient recovery after procedures.
- Assist in transfer of patients in and out of Endoscopy.
- Reprocess endoscopy equipment (decontamination) and perform relevant safety checks.
- Daily checks of the department and scope cabinet as applicable.
Qualifications and requirements
- Experience in Endoscopy or a relevant area is required for application.
- HCA applicants will work under the supervision of a Registered Nurse/Midwife, with competence aligned to their level of knowledge and skills.
- Flexibility to work in a fast-paced environment; some roles may require weekend shifts at multiple sites.
