Overview

The C&W hospital has a strong Endoscopy service. The team is led by the Lead Nurse Endoscopy and Consultant Clinical Lead who work alongside the clinical and management teams. The Endoscopy department is JAG accredited with up-to-date equipment and friendly staff. There is strong multi-disciplinary working and close links with other providers. We provide a range of gastrointestinal procedures in four well-equipped endoscopy rooms and run a five-day service with out-of-hours support to the Gastroenterology team for gastrointestinal bleeds.

Key areas of Responsibility
  • Clinical Support Role: Under direct supervision assists with the delivery of care as described by the Registered Nurse.
  • Assist patients with general hygiene needs, reporting any changes in patients’ condition.
  • Assist the patient to dress appropriately and safeguard patients’ belongings and space.
  • Under supervision, take and record the patient’s observations (e.g., temperature, skin assessment) as required, and inform the registered nurse of any observed changes in the patient’s condition.
  • Support the Registered Nurse in meeting and recording patients’ elimination needs; report changes and record quantities and frequency on relevant charts.
  • Work with the Registered Nurse to gain knowledge of pressure area care, mobilisation aids, and their safe use.
  • Assist the Registered Nurse in moving, handling and positioning of patients, adhering to the Trust Moving and Handling policy.
  • Report physical and psychological changes in a patient’s condition to the Registered Nurse; ensure pain and distress are acted on promptly.
  • Be aware of patient dietary needs and adhere to protected mealtimes; assist with meals and drinks as appropriate and record intake.
  • Communicate relevant information regarding patient care to the Registered Nurse; assist in supporting patients and families, including end-of-life care as required.
  • Contribute to health promotion and education (e.g., prevention of pressure ulcers, deep vein thrombosis).
  • Participate in regular unit meetings and attend other meetings as requested.
  • undertake tasks and procedures appropriate to competency within the care environment, including recording vital signs where required.
  • Participate in research activities as required.
  • Assist in maintenance of stock levels, re-stocking equipment, pushing beds, and stocking linen.
  • Ensure safety of patients and staff in the clinical environment.
  • Assist with patient dietary requirements and greet/assist visitors in a welcoming manner.
  • Provide administrative support when required and assist with patient transfers within the hospital.
  • Prepare the suction box daily and schedule endoscopy appointments on Cerner, including interventional procedures.
  • Ensure admission cubicles are stocked with linen and cannulation kits; undergo cannulation training to support endoscopic procedures under the instruction of a Registered Nurse.
  • Ensure prep rooms and linen areas have appropriate supplies; maintain patient bed boards and discharge lounge amenities (refreshments and beverages as applicable).
  • Support the team during endoscopic procedures, collect specimens as needed, and assist in transferring patients to and from the Endoscopy unit.
  • Reprocess endoscopy equipment (decontamination) and conduct daily checks of the department and scope cabinet.
Requirements / Qualifications

To apply for this role you will need experience in Endoscopy or a relevant area. A Healthcare Assistant (HCA) can undertake a range of roles within their overall job, with responsibilities appropriate to their knowledge and skills. Irrespective of the patient care pathway, core competencies should be consistently applied. Roles operate under supervision of a Registered Nurse/Midwife.
