Job description
Overview

My client is looking for an experienced Electrical Design Engineer with a background working for a contractor to join their growing and forward-thinking engineering consultancy. This is an exciting opportunity to become part of a dynamic, chartered M&E consultancy that combines practical expertise with a deep commitment to innovation and sustainability. The company works on a range of high-performance buildings and infrastructure, striving for smarter, more self-sustaining systems across the built environment. You will be joining a small, highly skilled team where your contributions will be valued, your ideas heard, and your technical input will help shape next-generation solutions.

About the Role

As an Electrical Design Engineer, you will bring your practical site-based knowledge into the heart of the design process. You will be involved in delivering detailed electrical designs, system integration, and performance-driven solutions that support the long-term sustainability of the buildings and infrastructure served. This role is ideal for someone who has worked on-site or within a contractor environment, who now wants to apply that real-world understanding into consultancy design—ensuring systems are not only well-engineered but also buildable, cost-effective, and future-proof.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver full electrical design packages across RIBA Stages 1-5
  • Create technical drawings, schematics, and cable routing plans
  • Perform electrical calculations including load assessments, cable sizing, and fault analysis
  • Ensure all designs comply with UK regulations (e.g. BS7671) and sustainability targets
  • Coordinate closely with mechanical engineers, architects, contractors, and external consultants
  • Participate in design reviews, feasibility studies, and project meetings
  • Engage with renewable and intelligent building technologies as part of integrated design solutions
  • Attend occasional site visits for surveys, inspections, and client meetings
Requirements
  • 3+ years of UK experience in electrical design within the built environment
  • Background working for a contractor or on construction sites (not just consultancy)
  • Strong knowledge of UK electrical regulations, building codes, and design standards
  • Competent with AutoCAD, Revit, or other design tools
  • Ability to produce and review detailed technical documentation
  • Practical mindset and awareness of how electrical systems are installed and maintained
  • Comfortable working in a small, collaborative team with a hands-on approach
  • Full UK working rights; driving licence preferred
Desirable Skills & Experience
  • Exposure to low-carbon technologies, battery storage, and renewables (e.g. solar PV, EV charging)
  • Familiarity with BIM processes and multidisciplinary coordination
  • Awareness of building performance modelling, SBEM or EPC calculations
  • Experience working on data centres, critical systems, or smart buildings
  • Working towards or holding professional registration (IET, CEng, etc.)
What's on Offer
  • A collaborative environment where innovation and sustainability are core values
  • Projects that focus on future-ready building design and energy independence
  • Clear progression pathway with mentorship from experienced chartered engineers
  • Flexibility around working arrangements (office/home balance)
  • Opportunity to shape and influence real-world outcomes in a rapidly evolving sector
