Job description
Overview

The successful applicant will be responsible for overall management and improvement of EHS performance across the site, working with the EHS Director and other team members as appropriate. There is a potential for this position to have direct reports in the form of early talent, placement students or apprenticeships. In addition, there may be an opportunity to manage permanent and interim contract-worker staff and associated budgets. This position will include working with the Global EHS function and other GSK sites within the network in the UK and globally. Responsibilities
  • Provide expert EHS advice and technical guidance to Worthing site managers and staff to maintain and improve EHS performance, enable safe work, and implement Core EHS Programs (Safety Leadership, Environmental Sustainability, Global Health).
  • Integrate EHS into site operations through Management Monitoring (Level 1) and Independent Business Monitoring (Level 2) audits and by contributing to site EHS strategies, plans, and accountability meetings.
  • Lead and manage investigations of accidents and significant near‑misses, ensuring root‑cause analysis and timely implementation of preventive actions.
  • Design and deliver training and support to managers and employees so they can effectively manage EHS risks and safely carry out their duties.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships and communications with EHS stakeholders (HSE, Environment Agency, Global GSK functions, Site Leadership Team and site staff) to drive alignment and engagement.
  • Drive and support site sustainability initiatives (carbon, water, waste, biodiversity) and deputise for the EHS Director or other SMEs as required based on capability.
Required Qualifications
  • Extensive experience of working in a pharmaceutical manufacturing or other highly regulated technical industry.
  • Operational knowledge and understanding of manufacturing processes in the pharmaceutical, FMCG or any other high‑hazard industry.
  • NEBOSH Certificate or similar qualification in Occupational Health & Safety, Process Safety, or Environmental management.
  • Graduate degree (in a relevant subject) with a broad technical/engineering/scientific skills base.
  • Demonstrated project management expertise and excellent communication across all levels of the organisation.
  • The ability to coach, mentor and inspire site front line leaders, engineers, and technicians in order to ensure they can proactively identify risks and implement robust solutions.
Preferred Qualifications & Skills
  • NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety, Construction Management or Fire Safety, Process Safety or Loss Prevention.
  • Chartered Waste Management or Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor certification.
  • Experience of Industrial Hygiene monitoring for breathing air, dust, noise, vibration or radiation and implementing associated Exposure Control measures.
  • Certificate of Operational Competence in Occupational Hygiene (OH).
  • Experience of management of major accident hazards.
  • Chartered status in a relevant Engineering, Scientific or Technical discipline.

The site manufactures antibiotics. It is advised that you consider this when deciding to apply for this position. GSK Worthing Site is a mixed manufacturing site with complex regulatory pressures. Manufacturing processes are highly technical and include high‑hazard activities.
