Job description

Are you a recent University graduate? Are you interested in supporting children with mental health challenges? Are you passionate about helping others, with a patient and encouraging approach?

A Specialist School near Tilehurst is seeking a dedicated Graduate to join their team as a Mental Health/Behaviour Support Assistant. The school caters for children aged 4-16 who face social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) challenges, including attachment disorders, ADHD, anxiety, trauma, and low self-esteem.

Many of the pupils have experienced adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and therefore struggle in a mainstream environment. In this role, you will be supporting a small class of 5 to 10 pupils, collaborating with the school's teaching team, therapists, and support staff to deliver specialist education and interventions that aim to boost the students’ learning, personal development, and emotional growth.

As a Mental Health/Behaviour Support Assistant, you will:
  1. Encourage academic progress and provide emotional support.
  2. Manage and respond to challenging behaviours caused by SEMH needs.
  3. Identify individual needs and triggers, and help guide students to overcome obstacles.
  4. Promote positive decision-making, reduce anti-social behaviours, and increase academic performance through trauma-informed practices.

This is a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a supportive specialist environment. By engaging with restorative and trauma-informed practices, you will build a strong foundation for a future career in Psychology, Therapy, Counselling, or Social Work.
