Job description
Overview

The Diabetes Specialist Midwife plays a vital role in delivering high-quality, evidence-based care to women and birthing people with diabetes during pregnancy and the postnatal period. Working within Croydon Health Services’ maternity department, the post holder will provide specialist support in both midwife-led and consultant-led clinics, as well as inpatient settings.

This role involves offering clinical advice, coordinating care within a multidisciplinary team, and contributing to service development through audits, education, and guideline implementation. The position requires a proactive, compassionate professional committed to improving outcomes for mothers and babies while upholding the Trust’s values of compassion, professionalism, respect, and safety.

  • Deliver specialist midwifery care and diabetes support across antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal pathways.
  • Provide education and guidance to women and birthing people newly diagnosed with gestational diabetes, including safe insulin administration.
  • Collaborate with the Lead Diabetes Specialist Midwife to review diabetes control, arrange follow-up care, and support service management in their absence.
  • Participate in teaching and mentorship for midwives, students, and support staff, ensuring a positive learning environment.
  • Maintain high standards of clinical practice through evidence-based care, audit participation, and adherence to Trust policies.
  • Contribute to parent education sessions and promote breastfeeding from the antenatal period.
  • Ensure accurate record-keeping and compliance with clinical governance, safeguarding, infection control, and health and safety protocols.
