Job summary

A leading manufacturing company is seeking ambitious graduates in Shrewsbury for its Graduate Development Programme. Caterpillar Shrewsbury have over 100 years of history of designing, developing, manufacturing, supporting and re-manufacturing engines, transmissions and powerpacks for defence applications around the world. A small but skilled and versatile team, the Engineering and Project Management team deliver innovative engineering solutions to our defence customers unique problems, levering technology and technical expertise from the wider Caterpillar Enterprise. The team additionally provides engineering support to the remanufacturing side of the Shrewsbury business, to ensure the factory can continue to deliver remanufacture engines and transmissions to our military customers around the world.

What happens after the graduate scheme?

Upon successful completion of the rotational programme, you will progress into a key role where you will directly contribute to the operational and project activity that is at the heart of our business. We will provide you with the training and support you need to be successful at Caterpillar.

Job duties and responsibilities

Job duties and responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

The successful Candidate will work within the Development and Applications engineering team but may also have rotations within other relevant functional areas such as Design engineering and Project Management. You will be working on real projects from day one and typical duties as a Development and Applications Graduate engineer may include:

  • Supporting the build of prototype engines and transmissions in our dedicated Development Workshop by ensuring accurate build instructions are issued to the technicians in a timely manner.

  • Creating and executing validation and verification test plans to demonstrate that prototype engines and transmissions meet our customers’ requirements.

  • Use electronic communication tools / in house software to verify that engines and transmissions are performing to their full potential in both test cell and real-world application environments.

  • Carry out complex data analysis /reduction using raw data from product testing and present results to key stakeholders in either both the verbal and written form.

  • Supporting domestic and international customers within the defense sector to integrate Caterpillar powertrain solutions successfully to meet end user requirements.

  • Supporting the manufacturing facility by updating and maintaining engineering documentation, solving technical issues with build and test, and participating in product and process improvement initiatives.

  • Applicants will be on target to achieve a minimum of 2:2 honours degree level in a relevant discipline – Mechanical, Automotive, Design or Agricultural Engineering.

Recruitment Process Guidelines

Here is a brief overview of what you can expect when applying to our Early Career roles…

  1. Online Application: The first stage of the process is to complete the online application and attach your CV, this must be done before the closing date of the role that you're applying for. Once we reach the close date, we will begin reviewing all our applications, this may take a little while and we will contact you as soon as possible to let you know if you have been successful in moving forward to the next stage.

  2. Stage one – Video Interview: If selected, you will be invited to complete a user-friendly video interview which will then be reviewed by the Hiring Team. At this stage, if you are successful, you will be invited to attend an Assessment Centre which we anticipate will be held on 8th April onsite at our Shrewsbury facility so please try to keep that date free. We would also recommend that you check your spam emails and your Workday account for updates.

  3. Stage two - Assessment Centre: The Assessment Centre Day will look at a range of behaviours such as teamwork, decision-making, communication, and problem-solving. We aim to make these days fun, inclusive and as relaxed as possible.

  4. Stage three – Offer: After the Assessment Centre, the Caterpillar team will review the feedback and extend offers to our preferred candidates, we aim to do this as quickly as possible.
