Job description

Job Description

Short on time? This hybrid Design Manager role offers a level of flexibility rarely seen in the construction sector. Even better; you’ll lead the delivery of one their largest capital projects, working alongside a very strong team, which always makes life easier!

A major end client in the transportation sector is seeking to strengthen its major projects team with the appointment of a Design Manager. In this pivotal role, you’ll oversee the design components of a large scale construction project with an estimated cost of £300 million.

Covering the full project lifecycle—from RIBA Stage 1 to Stage 7—you’ll have genuine influence over how project objectives are achieved and how to secure the best possible value for investment.

Reporting to the Project Leader, you’ll take full ownership of the end-to-end design process, from inception through to completion, and will also oversee smaller projects as required.

Key responsibilities:

  • Developing project scopes that meet the organisation’s needs.
  • Finding innovative design solutions that are practical, cost-effective, meet engineering standards, and align with project scopes.
  • Producing clear, transparent design briefs for external consultants.
  • Managing and reviewing consultant outputs to ensure designs meet quality requirements, align with delivery milestones, and pass governance tollgates.
  • Working with the Asset Information Team and other stakeholders to determine asset information requirements for design and construction contracts.

To be successful, you will have:

  • A degree (or equivalent) in architecture, engineering, or a construction-related discipline.
  • Multi-disciplinary experience in engineering design or design management, ideally within a live operational environment delivering safety-critical outcomes.
  • Strong knowledge of design principles, construction techniques, technical requirements, and construction regulations.
  • Experience addressing constructability challenges, particularly on major building projects in operational settings.

In return, you will receive

A salary of around £80,000 – £90,000 per annum along with a £4,750 flex allowance, a 20% annual bonus, a signing-on bonus, an enhanced employer pension (up to 8% employer contribution), private medical insurance, 25 days’ holiday (increasing with service), plus numerous additional perks.
