Overview

Our well-established client law firm based in Hertfordshire/Bedfordshire is currently seeking Criminal Duty Solicitors to join their established team in the Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire and Essex Courts. The successful Duty Solicitors will be managing their own caseload and will be representing clients in a mixture of criminal law matters, where you will be liaising with Courts, CPS, Police, Counsel and any other professional body.

Responsibilities
  • Interview and advise clients.
  • Undertake casework, managing the case from inception to conclusion.
  • Administer casework and keep case management system up to date.
  • Ensure prompt and efficient billing, sending bills to private clients and claiming interim payments from the Legal Aid Agency where appropriate.
  • Regularly review cases.
  • Attend Court (including Saturday Court) to deal with clients.
  • Keep up to date with changes in law and practice.
  • Attend training courses.
  • Attend Police Station when required, even outside normal hours.
  • Hold the 24‑hour Emergency Line as requested.
  • Flexible working once court/police station work is completed.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Admission as a Solicitor and holding a CLAS certificate (Duty).
  • Right to work in the UK and live within a commutable distance to the location of the job role.
  • Ability to work on one's own initiative with limited supervision; ability to work under pressure.
  • Experience of Legal Aid practice.
  • Knowledge of billing and Legal procedures.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to prioritise and manage casework.
  • Legible handwriting.
  • Car ownership.
  • 1 year experience in court; CLAS certificate required; Licence Certification; Legal Aid, Client Care, Drafting & Advocacy skills; Accreditation.
