Job description
Overview

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust is looking for a Consultant Radiologist for a busy and expanding Department, predominantly based at The Princess Royal Hospital (PRH), with responsibilities across both hospitals’ sites.

Applications are welcome from candidates who wish to be considered for part-time or flexible working arrangements. Contribution to an out of hours on call rota is core to this role. Biopsy skills, CT or ultrasound would be welcomed. The posts will include sessions at the two main hospital sites within an overall flexible group job planning format, with an agreed overall sessional make up as described below.

Responsibilities
  • Share in the general imaging workload and collaborate with colleagues to support tumour-specific and other sub-specialty reporting, using PACS.
  • Contribute to the general work of the department, including reporting of the general radiographic examinations carried out within the main sites, as well as in the various community hospital locations in Shropshire and the CDC.
  • Maintain a general Radiology practice while contributing to sub-specialty areas, as per departmental needs.
  • Work flexibly according to changes in work patterns and requirements. Participate in the general on-call rota. On call overnight is outsourced from 8.30pm to 8.30am and weekdays/weekends after 5.30pm to provide a more sustainable work pattern. On site attendance will occasionally be necessary during on call periods.
  • Provide general radiological sessions including inpatient/outpatient cross section as well as plain films and body ultrasound. Maintain general radiology skills for on call work.
  • Address GP and clinician queries and vetting as core to the role.
  • Be involved in the organisation and administration of the Radiology Department and teaching of other clinical staff, including participation in regular clinico-radiological meetings with other Consultants.
  • Be involved in the training of junior Radiology staff, as well as support the informal education of a wide range of multidisciplinary colleagues, including foundation doctors, advanced clinical practitioners, and rotating registrars from Stoke.

Our main service locations are the Princess Royal Hospital (PRH) in Telford and the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH) in Shrewsbury, located about 20 minutes apart. Together they provide 99% of our activity and offer a wide range of acute hospital services including A&E, outpatients, diagnostics, inpatient medical care and critical care.

Job Plan and Conditions

A formal job plan will be agreed between the successful candidate and their Clinical Director and consultant colleagues within 3 months of starting in post. A full-time job plan is based on a 10 PA working week and will be reviewed annually. It covers clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities, with a clear schedule of commitments and personal objectives aligned to service improvements and trust priorities.

For a full-time contract, the job plan is divided on average per week (pro-rata for part-time) as:

  • 8 Programmed Activities (PAs) of Direct Clinical Care — includes clinical activity, clinically related activity and predictable and unpredictable emergency work.
  • 2 Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs) — includes CPD, audit, teaching and research.

The allocation of PAs is reviewed and may be adjusted as service demands change. Any applicant unable to work full-time will be considered for the post, with content modified in discussion with the Trust and other consultant colleagues.
