Job description
Main duties of the job
  • To establish Anaesthesia as integral to the peri‑operative outcomes of paediatric surgery.
  • Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of anaesthesia.
  • To share, with colleagues, responsibility for the day‑to‑day management of the anaesthetic department.
  • Teaching and training of anaesthetists in training / resident doctors and medical students where applicable.
  • To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing medical education (CME).
  • To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning clinical governance and audit.
  • To participate in quality improvement, data analysis and information presentation, and service development, as appropriate.
  • To attend care group and directorate business, operational and governance meetings as appropriate.
  • Fulfil duties of weekly timetable including any out‑of‑hours responsibilities.
  • Deliver pre‑operative assessment sessions.

Essential
  • GMC registration
  • GMC Specialist Register or within six months of obtaining CCT (or equivalent) in anaesthetics at time of interview.
  • FRCA or equivalent
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a broad range of problems in anaesthesia.
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
  • Paediatric anaesthesia in accordance with Royal College expectation of Adult General Anaesthetist with Certificate of Completion of Training.
Desirable
  • APLS
  • Management of Multi‑Disciplinary Teams
Experience
Essential
  • Paediatric anaesthesia at advanced level, e.g. a minimum of 6 months Stage 3 Special Interest Area (SIA) in paediatric anaesthesia.
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a broad range of problems in anaesthesia.
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
  • Experienced in clinical audit and clinical governance and the benefits of how this improves the quality of care provided to patients and ensuring this is embedded in clinical practice.
  • Emergency CEPOD and trauma experience.
  • Ultrasound‑guided venous access and regional anaesthesia.
Desirable
  • Specialist expertise and experience desirable in:
  • Paediatric transfer medicine
  • Paediatric intensive care medicine
  • Professional management and leadership
