Job description
Consultant Midwife, Band 8c

The closing date is 18 January 2026.

We are seeking an expert midwife to take a lead role in driving strategic initiatives and delivering safe, personalised maternity care across all clinical settings in Gloucestershire.

This highly autonomous role offers an exciting opportunity to shape the future of maternity services, ensuring care is centred on women, birthing people and their families, and grounded in choice, compassion and evidence-based practice.

As Consultant Midwife, you will provide professional leadership and role modelling in best practice, supporting midwives to reach their full potential as autonomous practitioners. You will play a key part in developing and implementing the vision and strategy for maternity services, promoting professional standards, advancing scope of practice, and fostering clinically curious, research-informed midwives.

This is a rare opportunity to influence maternity care at a strategic level, working alongside multidisciplinary teams to embed innovation, quality improvement and patient‑focused care. You will inspire and lead teams through change, ensuring women and families remain at the heart of every decision, while championing professional development and excellence in midwifery practice. If you are a forward‑thinking, compassionate leader with a proven track record in midwifery leadership and a passion for shaping exceptional maternity services, we would love to hear from you.

Main duties of the job

The role includes working directly in practice to support women, birthing people and their families, providing expert midwifery care, and acting as a role model to midwives. You will lead the development and implementation of evidence-based models of care, promote continuity of carer and midwifery-led services, and ensure safe, high-quality practice across all settings.

You will play a key role in professional leadership, supporting workforce development, education, training, research, and service improvement. This includes mentoring midwives, fostering reflective practice, overseeing clinical governance, and ensuring compliance with national guidance and quality standards. You will contribute to service redesign, strategic planning, and innovation, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, Higher Education Institutions, and partner organisations to improve outcomes for mothers, babies, and families.
