Overview

Consultant In Trauma & Orthopaedics with an Interest in Foot & Ankle Surgery at King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. This is a replacement Consultant post based primarily at the Princess Royal University Hospital with potential duties across Trust sites. The closing date is 05 October 2025.

Responsibilities

The postholder will work within the multidisciplinary team to provide and develop care for orthopaedic patients and to develop sub-specialist elective surgery services at PRUH/Orpington. The role includes a significant commitment to teaching and training of junior staff and participation in the general workload of the department. All employees are expected to undertake work on any of the Trust\'s sites as required by the service.

Main duties include:

  • The provision of a first-class clinical service
  • Effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialty
  • Sustaining and developing teaching and research in conjunction with King\'s College London / KHP
  • Undertaking all work in accordance with the Trust\'s procedures and operating policies
  • Conducting clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust\'s service plans
  • Maintaining the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty, the Care Group or the Trust

Job responsibilities

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Provide high-quality care to patients, including all aspects of treatment and related management duties for the proper functioning of the Care Group.
  2. Share responsibility for 24/7 cover for the Unit on a rota basis, including covering for colleagues during annual leave and short-term sickness.
  3. Provide clinical supervision of junior medical/dental practitioners as a shared responsibility with other consultants.
  4. Carry out teaching, examinations and accreditation duties; contribute to CPD and clinical governance initiatives.
  5. Maintain outpatient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed with the Care Groups management team where part of the service structure.
  6. Contribute to the Care Groups\' research interests in line with the Trust\'s R&D framework.
  7. Contribute to audit programmes, Morbidity and Mortality reviews, Clinical Governance programmes, and Learning from Deaths.
  8. Assist in formulating, implementing and monitoring the Care Groups Business Plan and service developments with internal and external agencies.
  9. Work within the contracted level of service and operating plan for service(s).
  10. Provide professional leadership for all staff in the specialty and support ongoing post-qualification education and training.
  11. Foster productivity and job satisfaction among staff; participate in appraisal where appropriate.
  12. Undertake Care Group management duties as agreed with management.
  13. Be compliant with infection prevention and control policies, including hand hygiene and environmental hygiene.
  14. Prepare for and undertake protective interventions in line with evidence-based practice and patient safety.
  15. Support the development of 7-day consultant-led services and contribute to future developments as required by the service.

Experience
  • Experience of all aspects of orthopaedic major trauma surgery with emphasis on complex foot and ankle surgery
  • Fellowship in Foot and Ankle Surgery
  • Experience managing complex foot and ankle trauma and a broad range of elective foot and ankle surgery including minimally invasive techniques
Administration
  • Experience organising surgical services in a busy teaching hospital
  • Familiar with current health service structures and recent initiatives
Management and Leadership
  • Demonstrated leadership within multidisciplinary teams
  • Management course or qualification
Audit
  • Strong understanding of medical audit; completion of audit projects
  • Relevant research experience
  • Publications or case reports
Research and Publications
  • Understanding of research methodology; publications and presentations relevant to the role
  • Experience managing research projects in large teams
  • Evidence of multicentre research collaboration
Teaching
  • Experience in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and exam preparation
  • Teaching qualifications or courses; teaching awards are a plus
