University College London Hospitals is seeking to appoint a consultant to the department of Neuroanaesthesia and Neurocritical care at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery.

University College London Hospitals is seeking to appoint a consultant to the department of Neuroanaesthesia and Neurocritical care at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. The post is required to meet the planned increase in clinical activity this year as well as ensuring a consultant led service at all times.

The National Hospital provides tertiary level care in a wide spectrum of neurological and neurosurgical disease with a regional, national and international referral base. The hospital is co-located with the Institute of Neurology in Queen Square, London WC1. Both institutions share the common aim of promoting research and teaching in neuroscience and its allied disciplines.

Main duties of the job

The department of Neuroanaesthesia and Neurocritical Care comprises 29 consultants and 39 trainees. This post supports all aspects of anesthesia for neurosurgery and interventional neuroradiology including Mechanical Thrombectomy. The appointee will have both fixed sessions and work flexibly to cover consultant leave within the department as required. All candidates must be eligible for full GMC registration and either already be on the Specialist Register or be within six months of receiving CCST/ CCT in Anaesthesia at the time of interview. Essential qualifications for this post include FRCA or equivalent.

Person Specification
Professional Qualifications
  • Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practise
  • On the GMC Specialist Register or eligible for entry within 6 months of attainment of CCT or equivalent in Anaesthesia at date of interview. NB: Non UK trained doctors must be on the GMC register and specialist register for anaesthesia by date of appointment
  • Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists or equivalent Qualification.
  • Additional further qualifications
Clinical Experience
  • Training in neuroanaesthesia and neuro‑critical care recognised by the Royal College of Anaesthetists, or that which is recognised as equivalent by the College.
  • Advanced training in neuroanaesthesia (minimum 6 months) in a major neurosurgical unit
  • Experience as a senior clinical fellow or equivalent in neuroanaesthesia and neuro‑critical care.
  • Experience in anaesthetic Pre‑assessment clinic.
  • Experience in more than one neurosurgical centre.
Clinical Skills
  • The post holder is expected to have the clinical skills needed to provide anaesthesia for a wide range of neurosurgical procedures. This includes anaesthesia for complex intracranial and vascular surgery as well as complex spinal surgery.
  • Experienced in anaesthesia for Neuroradiology including mechanical thrombectomy. Experience in techniques such as 'awake' craniotomy.
  • Experience of intra‑operative neuro‑monitoring, e.g. MEPs
Audit Management and IT
  • The post holders are required to have management skills appropriate to assist in the delivery of a comprehensive service for neuroanaesthesia and neurocritical care in association with other department members.
  • Evidence of quality improvement projects resulting in improvement to patient care.
  • Local committee experience
  • Evidence of involvement in change management or service redevelopment
Teaching & Research
  • The post holder should have experience of teaching different staff groups in the theory and practice of neuroanaesthesia and neurocritical care.
  • Attendance of teaching courses.
  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems; ability to critically appraise published evidence
  • Author of publications in high impact factor peer‑reviewed journals.
  • Track record in translational research relevant to the speciality
  • Experience of research methods and evidence of research outputs, including presentation and publication of translational research or clinical reviews
Personal Qualities
  • Communication; ability to communicate with clarity and intelligently in written and spoken English; ability to build rapport, listen, persuade/ negotiate.
  • Accountability; ability to take responsibility, lead, make decisions and exert appropriate authority.
