Applications are invited for a consultant cardiologist specialising in cardiac electrophysiology (EP). This is a replacement post to maintain service delivery of EP and cardiac electronic device implantation as well as to support development of a cross-site clinical and academic programme focused on management of ventricular arrhythmias.
The post-holder will be a fully trained and independent consultant cardiologist and electrophysiologist. The individual will be able to perform outpatient clinics independently, run catheter laboratory electrophysiology intervention and device lists for investigation and treatment of patients with cardiac arrhythmias as well as participate in the Consultant of the Week and Arrhythmia on-call rotas. The successful candidate will support the catheter laboratories and wards by supervising the resident specialist trainees and clinical fellows in the day-to-day delivery of care. The post will involve close working with the Arrhythmia Clinical Nurse Specialists to prepare patients for their procedures and to coordinate inter-hospital transfers for treatment. An important responsibility of the post will be to contribute to the development of a clinical-group wide approach to the interventional management of ventricular arrhythmias, working closely with colleagues at both Harefield and St. Thomas' Hospitals.
Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust comprises five of the UK's best known hospitals - Guy's, St Thomas', Evelina London Children's Hospital, Royal Brompton and Harefield - as well as community services in Lambeth and Southwark, all with a long history of high quality care, clinical excellence, research and innovation. We are among the UK's busiest, most successful foundation trusts.
At the Guy's and St Thomas' sites, we provide specialist care for patients including heart and lung, cancer and renal services as well as a full range of local hospital and community services for people in Lambeth and Southwark.
We have around 22,700 staff, making us one of the largest NHS Trusts in the country and one of the biggest employers locally. We aim to reflect the diversity of the communities we serve and continue to develop new and existing partnerships with local people, patients, neighbouring NHS organisations, local authorities and charitable bodies and GPs. We strive to recruit and retain the best staff as the dedication and skills of our employees lie at the heart of our organisation and ensure that our services are of the highest quality, safe and focused on our patients.
The job plan will contain 10 Programmed Activities per week, to be carried out mainly on the Royal Brompton site and also includes and additional on-call commitment. The appointee may work on the other two sites of the Trust, Harefield and St Thomas sites. This is an outline programme, and you will be expected to discuss and agree a detailed job plan including your personal and professional objectives with your Clinical Leads/Director within 3 months of your start date.
The appointee is expected to be proficient and independent in simple and complex arrhythmia interventions including catheter ablation and device implantation. The role will focus on complementing the local and wider team across GSTT, particularly in arrhythmia intervention and integration of cross-site services. The successful candidate will participate in rotas for electrophysiology on call and consultant of the week, in addition to providing ward rounds and supporting the weekly multidisciplinary team meeting.
Flexible cross-cover of catheter laboratory sessions is an important part of this post reflected by the allocation of 2PAs (DCC) for this activity. These PAs will be assigned to the sites with the greatest need as required.
The appointee will be encouraged and supported to develop an interest in ventricular arrhythmia research particularly with a cross-site and cross-disciplinary approach.
This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
