Job description

We have been assigned by one of the UK's most prestigious NHS Trusts to help recruit a Consultant Acute Physician on either a Substantive or NHS Fixed Term basis for 12 months to join their successful Medicine department.

Our client is a multi-site acute and community Trust, based on the outskirts of London, serving a population of over 336,000 across the area, and a tertiary cancer centre offering state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment services to a population of two million. The Trust admits approximately 90,000 patients annually, with around 75,000 attending the Emergency Department, and delivers about 3,000 babies each year.

The Trust has an excellent reputation, with one of the lowest mortality rates in the country. Ratings for medical care (including older people's care) have improved from ‘good' to ‘outstanding'. The rating for end-of-life care has also improved from ‘good' to ‘outstanding'. Use of resources has improved from ‘good’ (in shadow form) to ‘outstanding'. Additionally, the CQC inspection of urgent and emergency care maintained a ‘good’ rating despite the challenges of Covid-19.

The successful candidate will join a department comprising six acute medicine consultants, fourteen acute/specialty consultants, and thirty-three specialty medical consultants, all responsible for providing acute and general internal medicine services. Responsibilities include:

  1. Clinical and administrative management of medical patients in EAU & AEC.
  2. Providing consultant-level input for early and appropriate decision-making for emergency admissions.
  3. Supervising medical admissions through the emergency assessment unit, including flow management from the Emergency Department.
  4. Participating in professional supervision and management of junior medical staff.
  5. Optimizing departmental staffing and resources for maximum efficiency.
  6. Undertaking Clinical Governance and Audit duties.

The Trust is located in a beautiful suburb on the outskirts of London, with close proximity to major international airports and highly reputable schools in the area.
