Job description

Our client is seeking a Commercial Underwriter to join their team on a full-time, permanent basis. This role involves evaluating and underwriting commercial insurance risks in line with regulatory and internal standards. The successful candidate will work closely with brokers, underwriters, and internal departments to ensure fair client outcomes, regulatory compliance, and sustainable business growth.

Job Duties:

  • Evaluate and underwrite commercial insurance risks within agreed authority limits
  • Review client portfolios and negotiate policy terms to meet underwriting performance targets
  • Ensure all activities comply with regulatory and company quality standards
  • Liaise with underwriters and capacity providers to secure appropriate insurance cover
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with brokers, insurers, and internal teams
  • Provide expert advice and coaching to colleagues on complex cases and underwriting decisions
  • Support continuous improvement by contributing to internal projects and initiatives
  • Maintain a high level of market knowledge to support efficient, client-focused underwriting decisions

Job Requirements:

  • Diploma in Insurance (or working towards) is desirable
  • 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) including Maths and English at Grade C or above
  • Proven experience in an underwriting role, ideally with underwriting authority
  • Strong understanding of the general insurance market
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver client-focused solutions and build long-term relationships
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills
  • Professional, approachable, and collaborative working style
