Job Title: Cloud Infrastructure & DevOps Engineer

Department: Information Technology

Reports To: Cloud Infrastructure Manager

Location: Hybrid

Job Purpose:

The Infrastructure & DevOps Engineer role operates within the Global Forwarding Information Technology Division with a focus on its software products. This hybrid role blends traditional infrastructure engineering whilst helping evolve the organisation towards automated, cloud driven operations, including CI/CD and Infrastructure ‑ as ‑ Code (IaC) best practices.

The candidate will play a key role in maintaining reliable, secure, and scalable systems while driving automation and modernisation across the technology estate. The role is highly collaborative, working with development teams on the deployment and management of code, and with IT operations colleagues to ensure that environments are efficient and smooth running.

They will ensure that the final product is Enterprise level ready and can be fully supported by the rest of the IT operations team and documented to a high level.

Key Responsibilities:

Infrastructure:

  • Investigate, plan and implement solutions to achieve company strategy
  • Maintain and optimise our cloud-hosted environments, helping to ensure continual availability
  • Deliver solutions in a robust and repeatable way, using best practice automation and orchestration techniques
  • Monitor system performance, capacity, and availability using modern observability tools.
  • Implement and maintain backups, disaster recovery, and patching strategies
  • Troubleshoot complex infrastructure issues across servers, networks, and applications
  • Ensure systems are compliant with Information Security Policy

DevOps & Automation:

  • Good understanding of customer requirements and how these translate into the technical requirements of a system
  • Implementation of various development, automation tools and cloud infrastructure, e.g. use of Terraform
  • Creation and maintenance of Azure Native application YAML based pipelines including configuration
  • Contribute to definition and setting of development, test, release, update, and support processes
  • Monitoring of processes during the software development lifecycle, checking for adherence and proposing improvements and efficiencies
  • Selection and deployment of appropriate CI/CD tools
  • Managing and implementing recommendations for Azure scaling and subscription changes
  • Strive for continued automation of processes wherever possible
  • Keep up to date with changes in cloud frameworks to reduce risks to current systems, take advantage of new beneficial features, and stay compliant with the latest standards.
  • Champion innovation and help define and articulate the vision for future cloud development
  • Provide progress reports, flagging risks and issues, working alongside Product Delivery Managers and Technical Leads

  • Identifying and actioning cloud-based governance and “right size/cost” optimisations across the organisation
  • Create and maintain technical documentation relating to infrastructure and processes
  • Provide mentorship and SME support to junior colleagues and co-workers
  • To undertake any training that may be required by the Company

Person Specification:

  • Level 2 English and Maths or equivalent
  • Degree level qualification or proven experience in a similar role
  • Proven experience in a commercial environment
  • Excellent teamworking and communication skills
  • Solid experience with Windows and/or Linux server administration
  • Hands on experience with cloud platforms (Azure or AWS preferred)
  • Proficiency with CI/CD tooling and version control (Git)
  • Understanding of networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, Load Balancers, DNS, DHCP, routing, firewalls)
  • Experience with monitoring/observability tools
  • Understanding of Information Security best practices
  • Demonstrable knowledge and experience of implementing DevOps principles and IaC tools (e.g. Terraform)
  • Understands key stakeholder requirements and ability to collaborate with stakeholders across the organisation
  • Ability to solve problems effectively using logic, analysis, past experiences and experimentation
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills, with the ability to work on multiple deliverables at the same time
  • Ability to challenge existing “norms” and propose alternative methods for achieving better outcomes

  • Infrastructure and/or DevOps Engineer qualification(s)

Working Pattern:

37.5 hours week. Standard hours 9am - 5.30pm Monday to Friday with flexible working options available.
