Job summary

A regional healthcare provider in Portsmouth seeks a Clinical Trials Assistant to support innovative clinical studies within various departments. The successful candidate will be responsible for patient identification, recruitment, and follow-up to ensure trials run smoothly. Training will be provided to equip applicants with necessary skills. Ideal candidates should have NVQ 3 in Health and Social Care, strong communication skills, and enthusiasm for patient-centered research.

This is an internal vacancy and we invite applications from employees of Portsmouth Hospital University NHS Trust and Isle of Wight NHS Trust only.

Join our dedicated research team and help shape the future of patient care. We are looking for a Clinical Trials Assistant to support the delivery of innovative clinical studies within the Emergency Department, Women and Children's Research, and the Medical Assessment Unit at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust.

Main duties of the job

As a Clinical Trials Assistant, you will play a vital role in the successful delivery of research studies from start-up through to completion. Your responsibilities will include patient identification, recruitment, and follow-up, ensuring trials run smoothly and patients receive the highest standard of care. Full study-specific training will be provided to equip you with the skills and confidence needed to support our research nurse teams.

The single corporate service is delivered across both organisation. You may be based at either IWT or PHU and individuals may be required to undertake business travel between sites.

Job responsibilities

NHS Band 3: Salary £24,937 - £26,598 per annum.

Full time: 37.5 hours per week.

What we are looking for:

  • Experience in bedside care, including recording vital signs
  • Ability to use healthcare systems to screen patients and review clinical information
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and IT skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to work independently and flexibly
  • Enthusiasm for supporting patient recruitment in line with NIHR targets

Phlebotomy skills are desirable but not essential training will be provided. Previous research experience is an advantage but not required, as comprehensive in-house training and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) certification will be offered.

Qualifications
  • NVQ 3 in Health and Social Care or equivalent relevant experience
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Completed Care Certificate or ability to complete within 3-months of appointment
  • English and Maths qualification GCSE / Functional skills at level 1 or equivalent.
