Band 7 Senior Clinical Skills Facilitator
The Clinical Learning and Development team provides Trust wide clinical education, ranging from basic skills to advanced interventional skills and knowledge. You will join a dynamic multi-professional team to support and coordinate the development of clinical skills training for undergraduate doctors, nurses and the multidisciplinary team. This is a permanent full-time post. The post holder will coordinate educational activities and learning assessments and actively promote inter-professional learning across the Division and Trust.
The suitable candidate will be an experienced registered nurse with good clinical competence and excellent ability to teach and support learning.

Main duties of the job
- Maintain primary responsibility for ensuring the Trust provides a progressive learning environment for all clinical staff; coordinate the clinical skills training of the multidisciplinary team, including pre- and post-registration learners (doctors, nurses, nursing associates, midwifery, AHP and undergraduate doctors from Imperial College) by coordinating educational activities within the department.
- Manage the Skills Laboratory and equipment, providing training, assessment of clinical competencies and support.
- Participate in corporate agenda by contributing to practice and development within their division and liaising with clinical managers as appropriate.
- Work in liaison with the Director of Clinical Studies, Teaching Co-ordinator for Undergraduate Medical Education and Head of Nursing Practice Development and Education.
- Support all educational programmes provided by the Clinical Learning and Development team Trust wide.
- Promote and contribute to inter-professional learning activities across the Division and Trust wide.
- Provide educational and clinical support in the clinical area for 25% of working time.
- Demonstrate effective communication and customer care skills, acting as a positive role model for staff at all levels.

Job description and responsibilities
Key Result Areas & Performance:
Clinical Practice
- Ensure practice demonstrates current clinical knowledge and evidence-based care.
- Work in accordance with NMC, GMC and HCPC Codes of Professional Conduct and Trust Policies.
- Work clinically on a regular planned basis, supporting learners in developing their practice.
- Produce written accounts of each episode of clinical facilitation, documenting learning objectives and areas for development.
- Demonstrate comprehensive clinical knowledge and support advancement of knowledge and skills using evidence-based practice for all learners.
- Work effectively within the multi-professional team to promote and maintain a positive learning environment.
- Maintain effective working relations with colleagues across multi-disciplinary professions.
Education and Research
- Facilitate learning and continuing development of all learners, ensuring education responds to service developments.
- Develop and coordinate planned educational programmes to a high standard.
- Advise on educational opportunities and assist learners with personal development and appraisal objectives.
- Support learners in developing clinical competency using the Trust framework; monitor completion of competencies as required by ward requirements.
- Support Ward Managers/Department leads in producing objectives, development and evaluation of learning; monitor action plans.
- Support practice assessors, supervisors and preceptors to utilise learning opportunities effectively.
- Promote research awareness by disseminating evidence-based findings and keeping the Education Lead informed on research progress.
- Work with AEI staff and Education Leads to develop and review specialty-related courses and evaluation of courses.
- Collaborate with AEIs and Trust colleagues on Education Quality Reviews and quality of the clinical learning environment.
- Support education and training of new learners across all levels; participate in inter-professional teaching including undergraduate medical education.
Corporate Practice Development
- Collaborate with ward managers and matrons to implement development processes within clinical areas.
- Ensure clinical practice aligns with national guidance and standards (e.g., NICE).
- Identify themes from clinical incidents and complaints to inform ongoing education and development.
- Monitor divisional quality and performance and support quality initiatives.
Workforce
- Assist in maintaining staff training records and producing educational data for management.
- Lead multidisciplinary training to meet initiatives; support recruitment and retention through educational strategies.
- Provide comprehensive induction and orientation for new starters.
- Address educational implications from audits and incidents; ensure compliance with Equality, Diversity and Inclusion strategy.
- Contribute to Trust Education and Practice Development Forum and related groups; support ward goals.
Financial
- Use resources effectively and contribute to cost-efficient service delivery.
General
- Support Trust policy on Record Keeping; participate in quality assurance and audits; balance clinical and administrative duties.
- Contribute to clinical governance and guideline development; maintain personal and professional development; keep mandatory training current.

Person Specification
Assessment/Interview
Essential
- NMC Registered Nurse Part 1 or Part 3 depending on adult/child role
- Degree in Nursing or equivalent
- Clinical expert with relevant qualification and/or extensive experience
- Post-registration teaching/mentorship qualification or practice assessor
- Evidence of developing innovative practice and change management
- Basic IT and presentation skills
- Understanding of NMC Code of Professional Conduct and standards
- Awareness of current developments in clinical specialty
- Ability to work clinically and undertake full patient care duties
- Moving and handling capability
- Experience in teaching, supervision and assessment; staff management; audit
- Team player with initiative; commitment to high standards of patient care
- Desire to be a learning facilitator with enthusiasm for practice development
Desirable
- Willingness to work towards Practice Educator qualification or equivalent
- Critical Care qualification; recent NIV (CPAP, BiPAP) experience
- ILS/ALS trained
