The movement analysis service at Alder Hey has an opportunity for an enthusiastic Clinical Scientist to join our multi-disciplinary team.

This is an excellent opportunity to be part of one of the busiest clinical gait labs in the country.

The North West Movement Analysis Centre (NWMAC) is a vibrant department at the centre of the Orthopaedic Department at Alder Hey.

It has strong research and teaching links with Liverpool John Moores University.

The post holder will work as an effective member of a multidisciplinary NWMAC team in providing the day-to-day running of the gait analysis facility as well as the undertaking of service development and innovation activities.

S/he will also assist in the maintenance of the Movement Analysis Centre equipment in addition to patient testing.

Main duties of the job
  • To work in conjunction with other clinical scientists & biomechanists in the day-to-day running of the Movement Analysis Centre, including calibration, operation and maintenance.
  • To be responsible for all the technical aspects working closely with the N.W.M.A.C. manager and the biomechanist in the lab.
  • To keep abreast of computer technology developments and to be able to develop bespoke software packages.
  • To assist in processing and managing patient data, including regular backups.
  • To be able to perform complex technical procedures and assessments using the 3D gait analysis system. This will involve history taking, physical examination and accurate application of surface markers.
  • To use advancedknowledge to interpret and analyse clinical and non-clinical diagnoses in a wide variety of highly complex conditions, where there may be conflicting evidence or where some information is unavailable.
  • To contribute to the writing and presentation to the NWMAC team of high-quality comprehensive gait analysis reports based on highly developed theoretical and practical knowledge.

Job responsibilities
  • To work as an effective member of the multidisciplinary Movement Analysis Centre team in providing an efficient and up-to-date gait analysis service.
  • To assist the N.W.M.A.C. team in ensuring that gait analysis equipment is correctly configured for the appropriate data collection sessions and that processed data is of suitable quality.To be responsible for work within the NWMAC, as agreed with the Manager, and to plan and organise efficiently and effectively with regard to patients management and time management.
  • To maintain accurate, comprehensive and up-to-date documentation, in line with legal and departmental requirements, and communicate assessment and treatment results to the appropriate parents/carers, internal and external agencies in the form of reports and letters in accordance with Trust Data Protection Policy.
  • To have knowledge of and comply with the organisational and departmental policies and procedures and to be involved in the reviewing and updating as appropriate.
Person Specification
  • oEngineering/physics/science-based degree.
  • oRegistered Clinical Scientist, or working towards registration
  • oEvidence of in depth knowledge of motion analysis, theoretical and practical.
  • oEvidence of understanding of 3D motion analysis systems.
  • oTo be able to communicate with healthcare professionals effectively using medical and technical terminology.
  • oExperience with 3D gait analysis and signal processing
  • oEvidence of advanced knowledge in Excel, Matlab or equivalent programming languages (e.g., Python, etc.).
  • oEvidence of participation in research projects.
  • oAttendance at basic gait analysis course
