Job description
Overview

The post holder will contribute at a senior level to the running of a busy specialist Intensive Care Unit, including management of junior colleagues and trainees, and will contribute to a 1:8 full-shift on-call rota covering the Airway tier of the Neuro ICU. It is expected that the successful applicant will take an active role in the day-to-day running of the Neuro-ICU, including supervising junior colleagues and engaging with the wider MDT. There will be opportunities for teaching, quality improvement projects, and a phased introduction into stepping up to daily leadership of the Unit, under the supervision of the duty consultants, in preparation for the applicant's future career as a consultant. The role has traditionally carried a high rate of successful subsequent appointment to Consultant positions.

Responsibilities
  • Participate in twice-daily consultant-led ICU ward rounds, conduct daily clinical reviews of critically unwell patients, and be involved in all aspects of daily medical care.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication and documentation skills.
  • Engage in teaching and the development of skills under expert supervision, while also teaching and demonstrating these skills to junior colleagues.
  • Be part of the airway on-call tier for the Neurosciences ICU, paired with a non-airway tier for out-of-hours cover.
  • Contribute to the Neuro-ICU's clinical governance, quality improvement, and teaching programmes.
  • Participate in the day-to-day running of the Neuro-ICU and contribute to MDT engagement and multidisciplinary collaboration.
