Job description
Responsibilities

All postholders will provide cover as general urologists for elective and emergency work. In addition to elective work, each Fellow will participate in a 1 in 8 week on call rota (registrar level) with prospective cover.

Responsibilities will also include the supervision of junior staff, involvement in a regular teaching programme, participating in the weekly urology meetings (MDT/stone committee) and monthly departmental audit meetings.

The postholder's primary focus will be to develop subspecialist expertise in the management of stone disease. The fellow will become proficient in obtaining percutaneous access for PCNL as well as developing the skills necessary for removal of the stone. Flexible ureteroscopy and laser of stones will be routine. Open and laparoscopic renal surgical training will be offered to those wanting to develop this skill, although these cases would be shared with the Urological Cancer Fellow. The ability to learn to perform ESWL will also be offered.

Postholder Duties
  • Core and specialist urological surgical procedures performed on the applicant's own operating lists for patients under the care of Consultant Urological Surgeons.
  • Outpatient clinics held on a weekly basis either at Colchester General Hospital or additionally at a peripheral site served by the trust.
  • Day case surgery.
  • Diagnostic day case procedures including flexible cystoscopy (haematuria clinics) and urodynamics.
  • Educational supervision to junior medical staff.
  • Responsibility for carrying out and contributing to clinical audit activity and local governance initiatives.
  • Contributing to the writing of basic science and clinical papers.
  • Contributing to the weekly MDT meetings.
  • Managerial responsibilities where appropriate.
  • Forming of a 1 in 8 on‑call rota with prospective cover.
