Deputy Manager – Job Description

Main Purpose of the Job
Assist the manager and deputise in the absence of the Registered Manager. Support staff to meet the needs of children and young people, manage child protection concerns, offer supervision and collaborate with professionals to achieve optimum outcomes.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Ensure each young person has an allocated key worker.
- Implement each placement plan and coordinate staff responsibilities.
- Attend childcare reviews, planning meetings and act as a role model for young people.
- Develop systems for young people to consult on care quality.
- Maintain accurate written records and enable regular monitoring.
- Partner with parents, carers and professionals to safeguard and promote welfare.
- Chair children’s meetings and facilitate general consultation.
- Act as an appropriate adult at PACE interviews.
Staff Team Management
- Provide managerial control and direction of staff duties.
- Recruit, retain, induct and supervise new staff.
- Plan shifts and ensure smooth running when on duty.
- Offer consultation, informal advice and 1:1 supervision.
- Identify training needs and conduct annual appraisals.
- Address conduct issues and conduct investigations when required.
- Delegate duties to promote personal and professional development.
- Ensure staff work within policy, procedure and National Minimum Standards.
Resource Allocation & Operations
- Ensure adequate staffing levels and effective budget management.
- Monitor company vehicles, maintain cleanliness and manage petty cash.
- Monitor building fabric and take remedial action as necessary.
- Develop routines in consultation with young people and staff.
- Maintain reporting and recording systems in line with National Minimum Standards.
- Attend to administrative issues and provide weekly management information reports.
General Responsibilities
- Assist the Registered Manager with Statement of Purpose implementation.
- Contribute to changes, improvement and evaluation of services and systems.
- Deputise in the absence of the Registered Manager.
- Drive company vehicles according to policy.
- Work rota basis to meet young people’s needs.
- Allocate resources and maintain accurate financial records.
- Receive supervision and take responsibility for personal development.
- Carry out all other reasonable tasks directed by the Registered Manager.
Person Specification – Desirable Skills & Qualifications
- Secondary education with strong literacy and numeracy.
- NVQ3 in caring for Children and Young People (or equivalent).
- Working towards NVQ4.
- Management qualification.
- Valid driving licence.
Knowledge & Skills
- Knowledge of National Minimum Standards and Children Act.
- Awareness of equal opportunities, ADP issues.
- Team building, supervision and communication skills.
- Understanding of BESD children and challenging behaviour.
- Excellent organisational and motivational skills.
- Training and counselling skills.
- Drug awareness training.
Experience
- At least 1 year of relevant supervisory experience.
- 12 months in a residential setting with challenging behaviour.
- Experience as an appropriate adult (PACE).
