Job summary

An independent co-educational school is seeking a Casual Swim Teacher in Cambridge to assist in their learn-to-swim programme. The candidate will deliver high standards of swimming instruction while ensuring safety and providing a positive experience for all customers. Minimum requirements include an ASA or Swim England Level 2 Certificate and experience teaching diverse age groups. This role offers flexibility with hours totaling around 15 per week. The Role
  • Assist the Sports Centre Manager in providing, maintaining and developing the service of a learn‑to‑swim programme in a safe teaching environment.
  • Deliver all customers of the Sports Centre a friendly and positive experience through effective swim teaching.
General Duties
  • Deliver the highest possible standards in the teaching of swimming to students of all ages and skill levels, ensuring safety and compliance with legislation and procedures.
  • Instruction of swimming lessons.
  • Monitor and maintain safety and welfare of customers and staff, ensuring correct behaviour and usage of the Sports Centre facilities.
  • Be proactive and supportive when dealing with customers, vigilant of their needs and focused on service.
  • Arrive in sufficient time to prepare equipment and start lessons promptly, and put away equipment after use.
  • Follow the Swim England Learn to Swim Programme, plan and deliver lessons, ensuring adherence to the scheme of work and appropriate lesson plans.
  • Present and conduct lessons in an appropriate manner.
  • Be a positive role model, creating a fun environment to motivate and encourage children to participate.
  • Identify participants' abilities, encouraging them to reach their full potential.
  • Regularly assess each participant’s ability and progress, keeping accurate records on teaching tablets.
  • Correct faults in swimming techniques and suggest ways to improve performance.
  • Provide explanations and demonstrate swimming technique.
  • Organise and supervise assistants and helpers as appropriate.
  • Ensure all course administration is accurately maintained, including weekly registers, monitoring performance and recording certificates earned.
  • Teach to Swim England standards and maintain current knowledge of governing body programs, policies and practices.
  • Attend termly Swimming Academy meetings and other mandatory training or meetings as required.
  • Carry out any other general duties as specified by the Duty Manager to ensure the smooth operation of services offered.
Skills and Qualifications
  • All Swimming Teachers must have achieved, as a minimum, one of the following qualifications: ASA / Swim England Level 2 Certificate in Swimming Teaching, STA Level 2 Certificate in Swimming Teaching, or previous experience in a similar role.
  • Knowledge of the Swim England Learn to Swim Programme.
  • Experience teaching pupils in groups of mixed ability and age.
  • Knowledge of swimming techniques.
  • Ability to swim competently and confidently.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships and empathise with swimmers of all abilities.
  • Self‑motivation and personal drive.
  • Ability to deal with pupils, parents and their queries and concerns with tact and sensitivity.
  • Reliability and commitment.
  • Ability to work positively within a team, supporting colleagues.
  • Excellent communication skills to liaise with a wide range of people.
