About Us

The role sits within the School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences, and specifically within the MRI Clinical Research Department based at St Thomas’ Hospital.

The School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences are committed to improve the way we deliver healthcare through the use of advanced engineering.

The department has 9 MRI scanners and a catheterisation lab, providing clinical and research MRI services in the areas of cardiac, foetal, neonatal and advanced brain imaging. The facility is embedded within St Thomas’ Hospital. Last year we conducted over 9000 clinical scans, of which over 7500 were recruited to research.

The Cardiovascular MRI (CMR) Superintendent Radiographer provides senior clinical, technical and operational leadership for the delivery of high-quality cardiovascular MRI services within the Imaging Clinical Research Facility (ICRF) under the School of Biomedical Engineering and Imaging Sciences (BMEIS). The post holder leads the CMR radiography team in delivering safe, efficient and well‑coordinated clinical and research imaging, combining advanced CMR expertise with strong operational oversight and effective line management. Reporting to the Director of Clinical & Research Imaging Operations, the role ensures full alignment with the School’s clinical and research governance standards and supports clinical and academic leads in advancing innovation across the service. The post holder will champion MRI safety, drive continuous quality improvement and promote a culture of excellence, professionalism and compassionate care for patients, research participants and volunteers. A key component of the role includes contributing to staff induction, competency assessment, training and mentoring while supporting the introduction, optimisation and evaluation of novel imaging techniques in collaboration with physicists, engineers, clinicians and industry partners.

The role requires an expert level CMR radiographer with demonstrable academic contributions or experience supporting imaging research. A strong commitment to MR safety culture, high quality CMR practice and radiographer‑led research is essential, and the post holder will work alongside established scientific and academic teams within the University and NHS partner Trusts. Although based within Cardiovascular MRI, the post holder will contribute to the wider imaging groups, which include Advanced MRI, Early Life Imaging and the PET Centre, collectively delivering services to approximately 20,000 patients annually and accredited under the Quality Standard for Imaging.

Operating at the interface of clinical delivery, research management and multidisciplinary collaboration, the post holder supports delivery of the cardiovascular MRI research portfolio whilst ensuring clinical KPIs are also met. Responsibilities include feasibility assessment, protocol development, workflow planning, resource coordination and ensuring the accuracy, integrity and governance compliance of all research imaging data. The post holder will serve as a senior point of escalation for image quality, safety decisions and operational issues while ensuring research and clinical capacity are optimally balanced. The post requires onsite working, full participation in the CMR duty rota and support for weekend service delivery in line with operational needs.

CMR clinical staff may be asked to participate in clinical duties over the festive period and therefore may not be able to take 4 King’s concessionary/closure days at this time. Instead, the entitlement would be provided through time off in lieu.

This is a full time post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract.

About You

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

• BSc Radiography or Diploma of the College of Radiographers (DCR)
• HCPC registration
• Expert level experience in undertaking CMR scanning in NHS or independent sectors
• Previous experience of working in a research department involving MRI related clinical research studies as per the principles of “Good Clinical Practice”
• IV cannulation competence and experience
• Previous line management and mentorship experience
• Proven analytical and problem‑solving skills
• Proven skills in writing up policies, SOPs and procedures
• Effective communicator (in person, in writing or by telephone) who works well in a multi‑disciplinary team
• Highly organised, consistent and pays attention to detail
• Good interpersonal skills and a professional and empathetic attitude
• Hold or studying towards a post graduate qualification in a relevant subject
• Knowledge and understanding of clinical and research governance areas including CQC / QSI inspection regime
• Proven experience in undertaking service development / change management projects within MRI
• Prior contribution to research outputs and publications within CMR and other imaging related studies as a named author
