Job description

The Estates Hard FM Team plays a vital role in ensuring our hospitals remain safe, compliant, and fit for purpose. We are responsible for the delivery of day‑to‑day repairs, planned preventative maintenance (PPM), and operational testing across a wide range of building services and equipment throughout the Trust.

We are seeking a highly motivated and versatile Building Fabrication Craftsperson to join our multi‑skilled Estates team at Mile End Hospital and Royal London Hospital Retained Estate, providing essential operational maintenance services across the Trust’s hospitals and associated sites.

What we’re looking for
  • A flexible and proactive team player with a strong trade background in carpentry and building fabric maintenance, complemented by experience in painting, decorating, and plastering.
  • Ability to work across multiple sites, demonstrating problem‑solving skills, initiative, and a commitment to maintaining high‑quality standards.
  • Willingness to participate in the Estates emergency on‑call rota, which includes out‑of‑hours cover across all Barts Health NHS Trust sites.

This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled tradesperson who takes pride in their work and wishes to make a meaningful contribution to the upkeep and improvement of healthcare environments.

This is a varied and rewarding role requiring a strong background in building trades, ideally supported by a recognised carpentry/building services apprenticeship (or equivalent), along with proven post‑qualification experience in a complex building services environment.

Key responsibilities
  • Undertake a wide range of painting and decorating tasks, including internal and external painting, wallpaper hanging, plastering, patch repairs, surface preparation, and finishing to a high standard.
  • Carry out statutory and planned maintenance to ensure compliance with HTMs, HBNs, Health & Safety regulations, ACOPs, and Trust policies.
  • Skillful use of woodworking machinery and hand tools for the manufacture and repair of windows, doors, and access frames.
  • Install stud partitioning, ceilings, and other building fabric structures.
  • Maintain and repair building elements and associated equipment using timber, laminates, plastics, composites, and other suitable materials.
  • Deliver safe, immediate, and effective repairs to the building fabric with minimal supervision, while adhering to statutory obligations and operational specifications.
