Qualifications

  • Continuing training on the Bowel Cancer Screening System (Open Exeter) is mandatory.

Join Our Team as a Bowel Cancer Screening Specialist Screening Practitioner! Full-time | 12-month Fixed Term Contract or Secondment

We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Specialist Screening Practitioner (SSP) to join our dynamic Bowel Cancer Screening team. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in delivering high-quality, patient‑centred care within a nationally recognised screening programme.

As an SSP, you will use your specialist knowledge of lower gastrointestinal conditions to support patients throughout their screening journey. Your role will include assessment, education, and counselling across both the FOBt and flexible sigmoidoscopy screening pathways, working flexibly across one or more sites.

You will be part of a supportive multidisciplinary network and work closely with:

  • Lead SSP and fellow SSPs
  • Endoscopy teams
  • Colorectal surgery teams
  • Pathology and radiology services
  • The Multidisciplinary Colorectal Team (MDT)

Main duties of the job
  • To play a pivotal role in supporting the Berkshire Bowel Cancer Screening Programme (BCSP).
  • The Specialist Screening Practitioner (SSP) will be expected to exhibit specific skills in the management of disorders of the lower gastrointestinal tract arising from the bowel cancer screening programme.
  • To undertake assessment, education and counselling wherever appropriate.
  • To cover both the FOBt & flexible sigmoidoscopy pathways of the screening service in one or more locations.
  • To work closely with the Lead SSP, SSPs, endoscopy team, colorectal team, pathology, radiology and the Multidisciplinary Colorectal Team in the Trust(s) and maintain a clinical commitment to the bowel cancer screening centre.
  • To work collaboratively with the Programme Hub, Public Health/Health Promotion colleagues to provide the highest standard of care for patients participating in the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme.
  • To facilitate cross‑site working between Berkshire Screening Sites (currently Reading, Bracknell and Slough, extending to Newbury and Ascot). Cross site working is required for this role.
  • Shift work will be required.

Qualifications
  • RGN or appropriate BSc
  • Evidence of continuing professional development

  • Appropriate amount of post‑registration/graduation experience.
  • Experience of working as an integral part of a successful team.
  • Experience of the care pathway of the patient undergoing endoscopy and lower gastrointestinal disease.
  • Experience of working in management of cancer pathways.
  • IT experience.
Skills
  • Knowledge of the BCSP objectives/targets & standards.
  • Knowledge of clinical governance, risk management, valid consent and withdrawal of consent.
  • Excellent command of spoken and written English.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with particular ability to liaise effectively with multidisciplinary team members.
  • Audit skills.
  • IT knowledge.
  • Knowledge of legislation regarding data protection and confidentiality.
