About the role

As a Behaviour Support Assistant in a specialist SEN school you will work closely with pupils aged 11‑17 with Autism (ASC). Many of these pupils have additional needs including social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) challenges, communication difficulties, and varying levels of cognitive or learning needs.

  • Work in small groups with students who have behavioural or emotional difficulties.
  • Implement behaviour management strategies as outlined in individual behaviour plans or positive behaviour support plans.
  • De‑escalate challenging behaviour using calm, consistent approaches.

The school is a secondary specialist school for young people aged 11 to 17, dedicated to supporting students with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC). With small class sizes and a focus on creating a calm, structured environment, the aim is to reduce stress and improve engagement. Staff provide specialised care, tailored support, and a nurturing environment to help each young person reach their full potential.

About you

We are looking for candidates who have:

  • An understanding of Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and other associated needs (e.g., social, emotional and mental health needs, communication difficulties, or learning disabilities).
  • Experience working with children, young people, or adults with behavioural challenges or special needs.
  • Voluntary or paid work in educational, youth work, or care settings would be considered.
  • Strong communication skills – both verbal and written.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and in challenging situations.
  • Skills in conflict de‑escalation and positive behaviour reinforcement.
  • Ability to follow individualised behaviour support plans and safeguarding protocols.
  • Able to provide appropriate references and pass a DBS check.
