Job description
Position Overview

This exciting post will provide an opportunity for a Therapeutic Radiographer to be at the forefront of MRI-guided radiotherapy technology in the UK. We have an Elekta Unity magnetic resonance imaging linear accelerator (MR‑Linac), funded by the Medical Research Council, installed at The Royal Marsden in Sutton as part of an international Elekta Unity consortium. As consortium members, The Royal Marsden and The Institute of Cancer Research were among the world’s first to offer this pioneering form of radiotherapy to patients.

The post holder will be a therapeutic radiographer within the expert multi‑disciplinary team for the clinical delivery of MRI‑guided Radiotherapy and will acquire theoretical and practical knowledge of MRI so that they can support MR‑Linac service delivery and development. They will develop a portfolio of clinical MRI experience including MR safety and contribute to the research carried out by the MR‑Linac multidisciplinary team.

Responsibilities
  • Carry out radiotherapy and imaging processes required for the development of the MR‑Linac programme and routine service delivery, including the MRL, treatment delivery and pre‑treatment.
  • Attain competence in MRI, acquiring theoretical and practical knowledge of MRI, understanding MRI protocols and MR safety procedures in compliance with national MRI safety regulations.
  • Supervise the immediate radiotherapy team, including students, aides and visitors as necessary, and work clinically treating patients as required to support service continuity, possibly within a shift pattern in the Sutton department’s Linac teams.
  • Build key working relationships with the MR‑Linac Operational Superintendent, Research Superintendents (Radiotherapy), MRL Radiographers, MRL Physicists, Clinical Oncologists, Consultant Radiologists and MRI Superintendents (Radiology).
  • Act as a clinical practitioner role model for all therapeutic radiographers.
  • Serve as clinical lead at the work base, responsible for evidence‑based decision making within prescribed limits.
  • Analyse and approve images following designated training and adhering to protocols.
  • Prepare, plan and deliver treatment accurately, both independently and for members of the immediate team.
  • Maintain high standards of technical expertise and serve as a role model to junior staff.
  • Maintain professional standards for self and other team members.
  • Train team members in the operation of all equipment safely and efficiently, following manufacturers’ instructions and local guidelines under guidance of superintendent radiographers.
  • Meet regulatory responsibilities defined for an operator as delegated by the Trust under the IR(ME)R regulations and adhere to the MR‑Linac local rules. With appropriate experience, may be defined as a practitioner for concomitant exposures and attain Level 4 MRL authorisation.
  • Make evidence‑based decisions within the prescribed scope of practice, including analysis and approval of planning and treatment verification images, following designated training and adhering to work instructions and protocols.
  • Record keeping and provision of information required for statistics as required by self and team members.

We particularly welcome applications from Black, Asian and minority ethnic candidates, LGBTQ+ candidates and candidates with disabilities. As a Disability Confident Employer, we work to create a workplace that enables all staff to reach their full potential, believing greater diversity and inclusion will lead to a greater positive impact for the people we serve.

Flu Vaccination – What We Expect of Our Staff

At The Royal Marsden we have an immune‑compromised patient population that must be protected from the flu virus. Each year, seasonal flu affects thousands of people in the UK, primarily in winter, and can cause a range of symptoms from mild to severe or even fatal. The wellbeing of our staff and patients is of utmost importance, and it is the expectation of The Royal Marsden that all patient‑facing staff have an annual flu vaccination, provided free of charge by the Trust.
