Job description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 5 Staff Nurse post within the supportive friendly team on the Gynaecology Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) at Southlands Hospital and the Gynaecology Day and Ambulatory Unit at Worthing Hospital. We are looking for an enthusiastic nurse who is passionate about delivering efficient and holistic patient care to patients. The CDC provides care and support to patients requiring urgent assessment and diagnostic investigations, delivering outpatient care for General Gynae, Hysteroscopy, Colposcopy, Rapid Access (two‑week rule suspected cancer). The Gynaecology Day Unit and Ambulatory Unit also provide larger scale diagnostic services. The role will involve supporting patients and clinicians to sensitively deliver a consistent high standard of care.

Responsibilities
  • Support patients undergoing clinical procedures ensuring their comfort and safety.
  • Chaperone and assist clinicians and staff in the clinic.
  • Advocate and clearly present the patient/client point of view.
  • Ensure clear verbal and written communication with patients, carers and multidisciplinary team.
  • Identify concerns and manage consequences, completing documentation and escalating as required.
  • Assist with smooth running of General Gynaecology, Early Pregnancy, Hysteroscopy, Minor Procedure, Colposcopy, Rapid Access clinics and the Gynaecology Day Unit and Community Diagnostic Centre, regularly taking charge.
  • Effectively communicate with patients and relatives in a sensitive & compassionate manner, including persuasive and reassurance skills.
  • Provide health education and information to patients and carers.
  • Interact with patients, visitors and colleagues in a professional manner at all times.
  • Assist in resolution of any conflicts within the clinical area, resolving informal complaints locally and assisting in investigations of formal complaints.
Service Delivery & Improvement
  • Manage own workload day‑to‑day and act as shift co‑ordinator, allocating staff and organising cover for shortages.
  • Follow local policies, protocols and national policy to meet KPI and targets while delivering safe, evidence‑based high quality service.
  • Contribute to clinical governance, risk assessment and formal reporting of adverse incidents in line with Trust policies.
  • Ensure accurate data entry and support audit requirements, reporting stock levels and equipment availability.
  • Undertake audits as necessary for own role.
People Management & Development
  • Supervise HCAs, receptionists, students and Nursing Associates on a daily basis.
  • Support training of new staff and apprentices, acting as Practice Supervisor or Assessor to students.
  • Act as unit/clinic coordinator, ensuring adequate cover for subsequent shifts.
  • Delegate tasks and workload to match capabilities of junior team members.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Band 5 Staff Nurse post – requiring a holistic, adaptable and caring approach, highly effective communication skills and ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
  • Demonstrate experience in gynaecology and multidisciplinary team working.
Applicant Information

This is a cross‑site part‑time post of 28.5 hours within a department that works Monday to Friday between 08.00‑18.00 and 07:30‑20:00 on a shift basis. Visa sponsorship is not available; applicants must already have the right to work in the UK. Disclosure and Barring Service checks are required for eligible roles.
