Are you an experienced Healthcare Assistant with NHS experience looking to gain your Care Certificate?

Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust (BHR) are looking to recruit an experienced Healthcare Assistant with NHS experience to join their staff bank as a Ward Orderly.

BHR is an NHS trust which runs King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queen's Hospital in Romford. It also operates clinics at a number of sites in the nearby area including Barking Hospital and Brentwood Community Hospital.

JOB PURPOSE

To provide effective and quality support in the care and management of patients and relatives, under the direction of a registered nurse or healthcare practitioner.

The service users come from a variety of cultural backgrounds and the Ward Orderly will be expected to communicate effectively with all patients and relatives effectively. To work with clinical teams to deliver required care.

The Ward Orderly will undertake high quality, caring and compassionate personal care and associated duties under the direction and supervision of the registered nurse and registered healthcare professional and work effectively as a member of the multidisciplinary team.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Undertaking duties under the supervision of a registered nurse or other registered healthcare practitioner e.g. collect specimens.
  • Assisting patients nutritional needs including supporting patients at meal times, completing food charts and reporting any concerns to the registered nurse or registered healthcare practitioner.
  • Assisting patients with activities of daily living including washing and dressing; moving and handling, bed making.
  • Safe positioning of patients.
  • Proactively assisting in the prevention of pressure ulcers.
  • Reporting and recording information in an appropriate manner.
  • Actively supporting equality, diversity and rights of patients and delivering person centred care throughout.
  • Acting as an advocate for all patients.
  • Participating in ward/departmental meetings to ensure that effective communication is maintained with all staff.
  • Maintaining safety of patients, personal clothing and property in accordance with agreed policies related to security and confidentiality.
  • Maintaining a clean and tidy environment, including bed areas, store cupboards, sluice, treatment room and equipment used for procedures.
  • Provide clear and concise verbal communication to patients, clients and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Support and assist in the induction and training of junior Health Care Assistants and students.
  • Manage his/her time effectively and perform allocated tasks within a reasonable time frame, knowing when to seek support, assistance and advice from other team members.
  • Answer the telephone in a clear, friendly, helpful and professional manner. Take any messages accurately and refer to a registered nurse/midwife as necessary.
  • Demonstrate a caring approach to patients/clients, their families and visitors and to have good verbal and non-verbal communication skills.
  • Maintain own statutory, mandatory training, and divisional/directorate specific essential training.
  • To have an awareness of relevant policies and procedures.
  • Understand own limitations and know where to find advice and assistance.
  • Take any messages accurately and refer to a registered nurse/midwife as necessary.

Please note that this is a newly created role and it is expected that as the organisation develops and changes, it may be necessary to vary the tasks and/or the responsibilities of the postholder. This will be done in consultation with the postholder and it is hoped that agreement can be reached to any reasonable changes.

PERSON SPECIFICATION
  • Must have NHS experience.
  • Obtained an Educational level of level A – C English and Maths or willingness to work towards equivalent.
  • Attention to detail including ability to keep clear and accurate written records.
  • Able to communicate clearly with patients and colleagues care setting.
  • Demonstrable ability to work within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Good written, verbal and non-verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to organize.
  • Experience working as part of a team.
  • Currently undertaking training as a student nurse or student allied health professional and has completed at least one practical placement.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
