Volunteer Process and Policies

The Board of School Directors (the Board) values the contributions of parents/guardians and community members to the educational and extracurricular programs of the Northampton Area School District. Volunteers are welcomed subject to requirements and procedures as set forth in its Volunteer Policy. For a full understanding of the Board’s Volunteer expectations, review relevant Board Policy, including policy 916: School Volunteers, found here.

A volunteer is defined as an adult who applies for or holds an unpaid position as a volunteer with a school or a program, activity, or service, and who is responsible for a child’s welfare or has direct volunteer contact with children.

The role of volunteers is to assist, but not replace or assume district staff responsibilities. Volunteers may undertake activities in support of district staff, provided such activities do not conflict with policy requirements or district procedures.

  • Under no circumstances shall volunteers administer or enforce discipline upon students.
  • Except in an emergency, volunteers shall not administer first aid or other medical assistance to students.
  • Volunteers shall not operate district motor vehicles or transport students other than the volunteer’s own children, unless specifically authorized by the Board on a case-by-case basis.
  • Volunteers must maintain confidentiality of student information and read and sign the district Confidentiality Statement.
  • Volunteers will be required to submit to Raptor ID scans upon entering school buildings.

Volunteer responsibilities

A volunteer shall report suspected child abuse if there is reasonable cause to suspect a child is a victim and shall read the district's Policy No. 806 regarding the duty to report child abuse.

Certifications Required To Serve

Prior to serving as a volunteer, the following information must be completed, submitted for approval, and filed with the District Personnel Office:

  • 1) A report of criminal history record information from the Pennsylvania State Police or a statement that the State Police central repository contains no such information
  • 2) Certification from the Department of Human Services regarding designation in the Statewide database as an alleged perpetrator in a pending child abuse investigation or as a founded/indicated perpetrator
  • 3) A report of Federal criminal history record information
  • 4) The results of a tuberculosis examination (e.g., PPD/Tine test) as required by state law and regulations

The District is willing to accommodate volunteers with disabilities and/or special needs. Volunteers requiring accommodations should contact the relevant building principal.

Disqualification and Privileges

Holding a volunteer position is a privilege conferred by the Board each school year. The district reserves the right to suspend or terminate a volunteer at any time, with or without cause.
