Overview

Position: Personal Assistant/ Live in Carer

Job reference: AT02/12/CW3

Area: Polebrook, Oundle Area (PE8)

Hours

168 hours per week live in care, 1 week on, 1 week off. Change over day Tuesday 11:30am to 12:00pm.

Employer

The employer has a 24/7 package of care with 1 PA and a cover PA already in place. The position is for a live in carer to support the employer, who is a young woman with Friedreich’s Ataxia, a disorder that affects some of the body’s nerves and heart. She is insulin dependent.

The employer is unable to weight bear and would need support in all aspects of her life. She uses an electric wheelchair. A personal assistant is sought to support her continued independent life enabling her to enjoy her pastimes.

Main Duties
  • The position is for a live in carer (while on shift) to support the employer with all areas of personal care, including stoma and catheter care.
  • Assist the employer in the preparation and cooking of all meals. Support required with feeding and to ensure she doesn’t choke.
  • All household tasks will be required: cleaning, laundry and gardening to ensure the employer’s home is a safe, clean environment.
  • Completing the shopping, with and without the employer, using her mobility car (manual, adapted). Therefore driver required; some restrictions may be in place around age and any points on licence, to be discussed at interview.
  • Assist the employer with her medication, including insulin calculations and injections (training will be given).
  • Pet care for 2 cats: feeding, administering regular medication to one and as required. General welfare monitoring and trips to the vets.
  • Any other task which the employer may reasonably ask you to do within the scope of the job as a Personal Assistant.
Additional employment information
  • The successful applicant will be friendly, able to give empathetic support, while respecting the employer’s independence and able to take instruction.
  • Must be flexible, trustworthy and active with a good sense of humour.
  • The position is for a Carer to live on site during their shift; you will be provided with your own room with a TV and personal storage space. You will need to provide your own food and toilet roll. There is space in the kitchen cupboards and fridge.
  • Experience of live-in care and Friedreich’s Ataxia or other nerve-based illness is preferred but not essential.
