Assistant Quantity Surveyor / Commercial Engineer
Tier 1 Rail Contractor | Major Rail Infrastructure

Locations (2 roles available):
Central Birmingham (Metro / Urban Rail projects)
Wednesbury (Major Rail Infrastructure)

Hours: 40 per week | Monday‑Friday Working pattern: Site & office based (project‑facing role)

The Opportunity

This is an opportunity to join a Tier 1 rail contractor supporting major urban and heavy rail infrastructure projects across the West Midlands.

The role sits within the commercial function , working closely with Quantity Surveyors, Senior QSs and project teams to support cost control, commercial reporting and project performance .

This is a development role for someone with commercial project experience who wants to progress toward a full Quantity Surveyor position within a structured Tier 1 environment.

The Role

You’ll support live rail projects by assisting with day‑to‑day commercial management, including:

  • Supporting QS and SQS teams with cost control and reporting
  • Tracking actual cost vs budget, accruals and commitments
  • Managing and monitoring purchase orders, goods received notes, delivery notes, supplier and subcontractor invoices
  • Supporting applications for payment and cost substantiation
  • Assisting with change control and commercial governance
  • Liaising with site teams to close out missing or incomplete records
  • Producing weekly and monthly commercial reports
  • Supporting financial and commercial audits where required

This is a hands‑on role, close to delivery, cost and project teams.

Who This Role Suits

This role will suit someone who:

  • Is currently working as an Assistant Quantity Surveyor, Cost Engineer, Commercial Engineer or Commercial Assistant / Cost Clerk (project‑based)
  • Has experience working on live construction or infrastructure projects
  • Understands how commercial control works on site
  • Wants progression into a Quantity Surveyor role
  • Is comfortable working with both numbers and delivery teams
Essential Experience & Background
  • Experience in a project-based commercial or cost role
  • Exposure to construction, rail, civils or infrastructure environments
  • Strong Excel skills and confidence working with cost data
  • Good understanding of cost tracking, commitments, accruals, commercial records
Desirable Experience
  • Experience supporting QS or commercial teams
  • Rail or infrastructure project exposure
  • Familiarity with payment processes and cost reporting
