Job description

Advocacy clerking plays a crucial role in the effective management of cases dealt with by the Crown Prosecution Service, primarily in the Crown Court.

As an advocacy clerking manager, you lead and support a small team of clerking assistants within the Crown Advocacy Unit (CAU), ensuring the team is in line with the Crown Prosecution Service Advocacy Strategy. Your role involves overseeing the team day-to-day, their performance, and wellbeing.

Reporting to the B2/HEO manager, you are responsible for fostering a positive team environment and ensuring effective clerking. A key part of your role is to build and maintain strong working relationships with key stakeholders, including chambers' clerks and Crown Court listings teams, ensuring regular engagement and communication.

The Crown Prosecution Service is based in England and Wales. If you're applying for this role and live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you must let us know when accepting this offer as you need permission to work from your home address if hybrid working is part of your role.

You must be aged 16 before starting in this role. The start date is expected to be 8-12 weeks after the application deadline.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • You are responsible for timely briefing of in-house KC, senior crown advocates and crown advocates in line with Briefing Principles.
  • You lead and manage advocacy clerking assistants in pursuit of team and shared objectives.
  • You support the development of staff by way of clear accountabilities and decision-making abilities, training opportunities, and monitoring team performance in line with agreed civil service values and behaviours.
  • You foster build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders by way of regular engagement, communication and liaison, including attending regular stakeholder meetings.
  • You support the development needs and training, of crown advocates, by providing buddying and shadowing opportunities, and assist the legal crown advocacy manager in ensuring standards are met.
