Overview

A career as a Programme Facilitator in Kent, Surrey and Sussex Probation Service may be for you. Providing interventions to people who engage in harmful behaviour helps reduce the likelihood of reoffending and is a core part of our work in HMPPS. Our Programme Facilitators deliver a range of Accredited Programmes, including Thinking Skills Programme, Building Better Relationships, Horizon, iHorizon, New Me Strengths plus Structured Interventions, Stepwise Problem Solving, Stepwise Emotions and Stepwise Relationships. You will deliver groupwork and individual work to people subject to Community Orders or on licence after release from prison. These programmes are designed to support people to desist from crime, build on their strengths, and lead more fulfilling and pro-social lives. You will work with people who have perpetrated domestic abuse, sexual abuse and/or committed other violent and acquisitive offences.

The job is based regionally and involves working with a diverse team of colleagues who are passionate about helping and motivating people on probation. You will collaborate with Probation Practitioners and Domestic Abuse Safety Officers to ensure high-quality input and guidance across the Probation Service.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver a range of rehabilitation interventions aimed at changing attitudes, beliefs and behaviour of people on probation with a full range of offence types and risk levels (including those convicted of sexual and domestic abuse offences), as determined by court sentences and Probation Practitioner recommendations.
  • Deliver evidence-based Accredited Programmes and Structured Interventions both in groups and individuals, as required, and in line with operational manuals and organisational policies.
  • Travel to various locations to deliver programmes across the regional area; travel expenses can be claimed.
  • Engage with Probation Practitioners and other agencies to discuss progress, required work, and any concerns related to individuals on probation; contribute to risk and needs assessments related to offending.
  • Work additional hours as needed, including evenings and weekends, and participate in training and supervision to ensure confidence and competence in programme delivery.
What we offer

The role includes the base salary plus unsocial hours payments for evening and weekend work (evenings: +30%, Saturday: +50%).

Requirements and training

Extensive training and support are provided to ensure success in programme delivery. You will learn about all aspects of delivery, including the theory behind the interventions. A 6-month probationary period is required, including undertaking an assessment centre and passing assessed training.

Standard full-time hours are 37 per week (unpaid breaks). HMPPS welcomes part-time, flexible and job-sharing patterns where feasible. Applications for flexible working will be considered in accordance with the Flexible Working policy.

Interview and assessment process

The assessment process evaluates the behaviours and strengths needed for the programme facilitator role and readiness for the required training. It comprises two activities:

  1. A facilitation exercise with follow-up questions. The topic will be emailed after an interview is booked.
  2. An interview relating to the role of a programme facilitator.

For the facilitation exercise, you will prepare a presentation on a topic provided after booking. You will be assessed against the behaviours of Communicating and Influencing, Developing Self and Others, and Managing a Quality Service. You will have up to 10 minutes to deliver the exercise.

Overview of the job

The job holder will deliver rehabilitation interventions aimed at changing attitudes, beliefs and behaviour of people on probation with a full range of offence types and risk levels, including those convicted of sexual and domestic abuse offences, as determined by court sentences and Probation Practitioner recommendations.

The main objectives are to reduce re-offending, protect the public, prevent future victims and support rehabilitation to help people build constructive and meaningful lives in the community, through delivering effective evidence-based Accredited Programmes and Structured Interventions.

The post holder will be regionally based within the Interventions Team and report to the Programme Manager. Travel across a large regional area will be required. There is no line management responsibility in this role. Regular unsocial hours (evenings and weekends) may be required.

Summary

The job involves delivering interventions in groups, or 1:1 sessions/remotely as appropriate, including work with individuals with learning disabilities or challenges in line with operational manuals and organisational policies. You will liaise with Probation Practitioners and other agencies regarding progress, needed work, and concerns, and contribute to the overall assessment of risk and needs related to offending.
